How You Can Help Others This Christmas

So 2016 might not have been the best year, but the holiday season is a great time to reflect on the good things that have happened and to give back a little something to the community. Offering some of your time to a charity really gets you in to the Christmas spirit and helps those less fortunate out at a difficult time of the year. If you want to do something great this Christmas, check out our top tips for ways you can help in Weston-super-Mare;

Feed a Family

With record numbers of families relying on food banks to get them through tough times, making donations to your local food bank could make a huge difference to someone’s Christmas Day. Donate food, money or your time to help keep needy families fed this season. Get in touch with the Weston-super-Mare Food Bank to find out more.

Befriend an Elderly Person

With an estimated 500,000 elderly people spending Christmas alone this year, a little of your time could go a long way towards making someone feel less lonely. Get matched with an elderly person in your area and visit them for a catch up or help them out around the home. The Royal Voluntary Service is looking for volunteers in Weston-super-Mare who would like to make new friends and enrich the lives of older people, contact them to find out more.

Walk a Dog

Animal shelters tend to get overrun at Christmas time and could always benefit from helping hands to look after the animals. Take a rescue dog for some exercise, or donate food, blankets and toys to rescue centres such as Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary.

Help the Homeless

Getting involved in a soup kitchen is a great way to give help to those in need of shelter and food. Comfort at Christmas is a soup kitchen operating from St Pauls Church on Walliscote Road with the aim of providing warmth and food to anyone seeking respite from the cold.
