How to Choose the Perfect Flooring

Kura Collection by Amtico

When it comes to creating the perfect “look” for your home, flooring is one of the most vital ingredients. The type and style of flooring that you choose can make or break the other design elements of your space, so getting it right is key to perfecting the interior you’re looking for. With so many options available these days, selecting the right material and style can be overwhelming, which is why we have put together a few tips to remember which will help you choose the right floor for your next interior design project.

Which room are you focusing on?

Whichever room you are looking to decorate, it’s a good idea to first think about how the space is used. For example, hallways and kitchens have lots of foot traffic so selecting a hardwearing material for these spaces makes sense. Hardwoods such as the Spanish Cherry Parquet above can cope with high volume traffic, while linoleum provides an inexpensive yet easy to clean surface in hundreds of designs. Both are available at our stores for fitting throughout the Somerset area.

Long gone are the days when carpet was the first choice for a bathroom. As these spaces tend to see a lot of moisture, stone and ceramic tiling are a wonderfully functional choice to avoid any mould or mildew build ups. While the world is your oyster for which flooring to choose for the living room, remember that stone and wood can be cold on the feet, so if you prefer your lounge to be a cosy space you may want to think about wool rich carpets such as the Abbeyglen Fermanagh Plaid design from Brintons below.

What style are you aiming for?

Using sites such as Pinterest to create mood boards of your favourite styles and colour schemes will give you an overview of which kind of styles you are after. Nothing quite beats seeing the samples in person though, as you can get a feel for textures and how easy it will be to maintain the product. Our dedicated team in Weston-super-Mare will be able to help you select the right style and material for your intended room.

It is worth noting that choosing a classic design will ensure the longevity of your flooring, meaning that you will not have to invest in a new one when you decide to change the colour scheme further down the line. Black and white tiling will never go out of fashion and is easy to update with colour pops when you grow tired of the existing colour scheme.

How to Colour Match in the Home

Parker Knoll Canterbury

There’s no doubt that sticking to a neutral palette is an easy way to create a beautiful space, but adding bold colours and patterns can be a lot more straight-forward than you might think.

The first step is to choose a base colour to work from. Certain colours can actually improve your mood, using orange for example can create a sense of reassurance and warmth while green generates feelings of balance and stability, so it’s important to think about how you want to feel in your chosen room. Selecting a neutral colour means you can alter the overall feel of the room by changing curtains, cushions and furniture without worrying too much about the walls, though you need to consider the colour of the flooring and whether this will work with other styles. Your base colour might come from your favourite artwork, a cushion or your favourite set of curtains.

Once you have found a base, you can move on to matching other colours with it. Using sites such as Pinterest to create a mood board of shades you like will help you to get an overall idea of how the finished look will come together, but the easiest way to mix and match is to stick within a spectrum of tones, such as:

  • Warm tones – autumnal colours such as red, brown, yellow and orange create a cosy, inviting atmosphere.
  • Cool tones – sea and sky colours like greens, blues, turquoise and aqua-marine help to produce a relaxing yet fresh environment.
  • Monotones – sticking to a black and white theme with accents of gold, soft lilac or hot pink creates a contemporary feel.
  • Neutral tones – a palette of natural stone, grey, amber and ochre will make any room feel modern and inviting.
  • Citrus tones – colours such as lime green, acid yellow or bright orange gives energy and vigour to a space.

Cushions, throws and curtains can be used as accents for stronger colours, but remember that choosing curtains that blend in with the walls helps to make a room feel larger by creating an unbroken line.

Top Tips for Cleaning Your Sofa

Parker Knoll Hanbury Chair

No doubt your tables, floors and shelves get a regular clean – but what about the sofa? The most frequently used piece of furniture in the home can become a magnet for dirt, dust and stains, but instead of calling in expensive professional cleaners, check out these top sofa cleaning tips;

Identify the material

Whether you have a leather, corduroy, linen, or cotton sofa, each material will require different care. If you are unsure, search for a label to help you ascertain what kind of fabric you’re dealing with.

W – sofa can be washed with water

SW – sofa can be washed with water or solvent cleaner

S – sofa can be washed with solvent cleaner

X – sofa cannot be washed, only use a vacuum cleaner

Give it a surface clean

Take all of the cushions off of the sofa and, using the upholstery attachment on the hoover, vacuum the folds, crevices and corners to remove food debris and dust. Look out for any nice chunks of change! If you are working with a delicate fabric such as silk and linen, make sure the hoover is set to a low suction to avoid tearing or ripping the fabric. Go over the whole sofa in horizontal overlapping strokes, particularly if the sofa is made from suede, chenille, velvet or corduroy. Clean out dust from button tufts by using a can of compressed air, usually used to clean keyboards.

Removing spot stains

Always use a white towel or sponge to remove stains as you do not want any colour to run into the fabric of the sofa. Choose a cleaner based on the fabric of your sofa, if you are not sure, carry out a spot test on a hidden part of the fabric to avoid damaging the material. Check out this video for ways to remove any stubborn stains from the fabric of your sofa.

Eliminating odours

Unpleasant odours can easily and cheaply be removed thanks to the amazing deodorising properties of baking soda! Sprinkle your sofa with the powder, leave for half an hour and vacuum up. You can repeat this for any particularly stubborn smells, or even add a drop of essential oil to the baking soda before applying, though be careful not to stain the fabric.

Cleaning leather

Cleaning leather is a bit different to cleaning fabric. This great video shows you how you can use baking soda to clean up dirty white leather seats, you can also use gentle soap and a slightly damp cloth to achieve the same effect.

Guide to Buying a Sofa

Alstons Camden

We can spend a huge amount of time on our sofas so it’s no wonder that it can be tricky knowing how to choose the right one. Fear not, as we have come up with a handy guide to help you make the right choice;

How much room have you got?

It’s a good idea to get the measurements of your room before you start to look around. Make sure you note down units in feet and metres just in case you forget your measuring tape when you visit the furniture shop! You will also need to think about the size of your doorframes and whether your ne sofa will fit through.

Which colour to choose….

Colours can have a huge impact on the feel of a room. Selecting darker colours may help to hide any marks or stains but they can make a room feel smaller depending on the colour of the floor and walls. Find a sheet or blanket in the colour you are thinking of choosing and drape it over your existing sofa to see if the colour fits. A light coloured sofa may help to brighten a room up but it will present its own challenges when it comes to wear and tear.

What’s it for?

If your sofa it going to be used frequently then it is important to select one which will be durable and long lasting. Have a think about getting one with removable covers so that they can be easily washed in the event of an accident. If you decide to go for a fixed cover, make sure the weave is relatively tight to prevent the chances of stains developing. You may also need to consider whether to get a dual purpose sofa bed to create more sleeping space for when friends and relatives come to stay.

So many styles to choose from!

Gone are the days of the simple three seater. Modern sofas include a huge range of styles to suit everyone’s tastes, such as corner sofas, modular sofas, recliners, futons, chaise longues and loveseats. Think about which style would fit in with the rest of your décor.

Mix it up

Don’t feel obliged to purchase matching armchairs with your new sofa, mix it up by choosing a set of chairs which complement the upholstery of your new couch.
