Interior Design: Mixing Patterns & Texture

Interior Design: Mixing Patterns & Texture

One of the easiest ways to make a room look as though it was finished by an interior designer is to combine unusual patterns and textures. Though it might look easy, there are definitely ways to get this trend wrong, so try to keep these tips in mind next time you fancy giving your home a makeover:

Stick to a colour scheme

Mixing patterns and textures that share the same colour palette is the easiest way to bring this trend into the home. Blend big, bold patterns with smaller, more detailed ones to maximise the monotone effect. You can also pair mixed patterns containing similar colours with neutral textures for a more laid-back approach.

Use a feature wall

Feature walls can look dated if using block colours, so keep it fresh with a statement pattern. Use big, bold, and bright designs so that you can use smaller pieces to bring more emphasis to the style. Creating a focus on the one wall provides you with the perfect canvas for adding accent textures and patterns.

Layer patterns and textures

On larger areas of the room, such as the walls and floor, it’s a good idea to display bigger patterns and layer the look with textured rugs, patterned throws, feathery cushions, and luxurious curtains while making sure not to overwhelm the space. Limiting your patterns to three or four will help to keep it simple and prevent over-clashing.

Use furniture

Patterned upholstery will add another layer of interest to your room, keeping in the same colour scheme will help to unify the room. Check out our great range of sofas to help you bring patterns into your home. This great Alstons Camden Armchair would make a great addition to any pattern inspired room! Could Your Sofa Be Damaging Your Health?

Could Your Sofa Be Damaging Your Health?

Do you suffer from a bad back? Find it difficult to stand up from a seated position? Struggle to stand for long periods of time?

It turns out that you’re not the only one. An increasing amount of research indicates that chronic back pain is on the rise, with many people placing the blame on poorly made office chairs and a general lack of spine health awareness.

But did you know that sofas can be a huge contributor towards back problems as well?

Modern trends have led to an increase in demand for softer sofas with deeper cushions, which means that less emphasis is put onto the support needed for the spine and neck. This results in an unhealthy slouching position, which can cause long term health issues for users of the sofa. Sitting for too long in this position not only causes stress on the spinal ligaments but increases pressure on intervertebral discs, which in turn leads to the chronic suffering from aches and pains that many of us seek treatment for. As the average person spends an estimated 60% of their day sitting down, this problem will only get worse if not dealt with swiftly.

Spine surgeon Ketan Khurjekar says, "The human body is ergonomically designed. When we sit on slouchy and soft sofas, we disturb the normal curvature of the spine and body ergonomics. These comfy sofas are good for sitting for a short time, but sitting on them for a longer duration can cause pain in the spine."

So, how can you avoid incurring a mountain of physiotherapy bills further down the line? When choosing a new sofa, it is important that you consider how well it will support your back. Try to choose one which will provide optimum support for the neck and spine, rather than the one you feel is softest. The NHS advises that the best sitting position is one which supports your back and keeps your knees level with your hips.

High back, such as this Stressless Arion 3 seater, are a great choice as they provide excellent neck support. They are also fully adjustable, allowing you to move the headrest to the correct position for your neck and come with the patented Glide and Plus systems which respond to your body’s slightest movements. These sofas are particularly great for building custom home cinema seating and their timeless design means they won’t go out of style anytime soon! This sofa is also currently in the sale with just under £1,000 off!

Getting Your Home Ready for Autumn

Getting Your Home Ready for Autumn

Have you put the heating on yet? We certainly have! The cosiest time of the year is back and we can’t wait to start creating a warm and inviting space to come home to after a long autumn day, changes in the season are the perfect time to get creative with the interior while preparing the exterior for the colder, wetter months.

1. Tend to the chimney
If you are lucky enough to have a roaring fireplace for the family to gather around during the colder months, make sure the chimney has been professionally cleaned and cleared to avoid any chimney fires.

2. Get the boiler serviced
The last thing you need when temperatures hit rock bottom is for the boiler to give up the ghost. Arrange for your gas company to come and service the boiler before you start using it every day so that you can rest assured knowing that it is operating at its best for the coming months.

3. Check the gutters
We might have had a lovely summer, but that won’t have stopped debris collecting in the gutters and preventing water from flowing through them properly. Arrange for a professional gutter cleaning service or take a ladder and check them yourself to ensure that they are clear and ready to manage the wetter weather.

4. Create a home scent
Nothing quite beats arriving home after a long commute in the rain, but creating a personalised home scent to greet you as you walk through the front door might just make it that much more perfect.

5. Invest in rugs
Let’s face it, who wants to walk on cold floors with bare feet! Rugs are much cheaper than carpets, and you can update your look whenever you want.

6. Stock up on candles
Be prepared for any power outages with a stock of candles. You can also save on your electricity bill by having a cosy candlelit evening once a week.

7. Get your duvet cleaned
Before you switch your duvet over, take it out of storage and nip to the launderette to give it a spruce up for the coming months.

8. Organise your hallway
Muddy boots, panicked school runs, overflowing book bags; the hallway gets the most traffic in the house. Install labelled coat pegs and a designated area for each person’s shoes to keep it as orderly and stress-free as possible.

9. Update the sofa
Autumn means spending lots of time on the sofa getting cosy and keeping warm, so now is a great time to update yours!
