How to Choose the Perfect Bed

How to Choose the Perfect Bed

We spend a lot of time in bed, about a third of our lives if we’re getting the recommended amount of sleep. Picking the bed that’s right for you is a big commitment. We’ve put together some helpful tips to help you sleep soundly on the bed of your dreams.

1. Road test

Technology has come a long way and while the internet affords us a great wealth of information and convenience, it will never be a supplement for physical testing. If you need a good place to start and you’re near Weston Super-Mare, come on down to our showrooms and we’ll point out some of our favourite beds for a cheeky afternoon nap.

2. Frame

Your mattress and bedframe should work as a team; spring mattresses go well with spring beds, slats go better with foam. When you’re buying a new bed it’s a good idea to buy a new mattress at the same time as both will last longer this way. Whilst your frame should be chosen on size and aesthetic appeal, the mattress should be chosen on your needs and with comfort first and foremost.

3. Storage

For most people, storage is a top priority rather than a luxury. The space under the bed is prime storage, and many frames and beds come with built-in options to make the most of reclaiming that space. Whether you use it as a convenient spot for your sheets and linens or as extra space for jammies and underwear, it’s a space that shouldn’t be wasted.

How Often Should a Bed Be Replaced?

Reylon Aurora

As we spend an average of 25 years sleeping, it’s very important that our beds are up to the monumental task of keeping us comfortable and relaxed! Beds play a key part in our mental and physical well-being, so it is vital that you take the best possible care of your bed.

Regularly turning the mattress should increase its longevity, while investing in a decent mattress protector will keep dust, mites, and bugs at bay. Hoovering and spot cleaning any spills or stains will also keep it in good condition, while letting the bed “air” every few weeks will help to reduce or remove any musty smells.

But, even with the best cleaning techniques in the world, all beds need replacing at some time or another. The Sleep Council recommend that you replace your bed every 7 years, even if it looks in good condition. This is because it may not be offering the support your body needs to get the best night’s sleep as it will have endured over 20,000 hours of wear and tear during that time. Given that we sweat half a pint of fluid every night and shed a pound of dead skin cells every year, our mattresses may end up harbouring all manner of horrendous surprises.

If you find that you are not sleeping as well as you used to, or that you are waking feeling stiff and achy, it might be that your mattress has come to the end of its useful life. When a mattress stops giving proper support, it dips in the middle, squeaks when you move, or you can feel springs poking through, these are all signs that it is time to invest in a new bed.

It is recommended that bases are replaced at the same time as mattresses, as these will have also endured the same amount of wear and tear. Bases and mattresses from different manufacturers may not fit perfectly together, which will reduce the longevity of your new bed. It is worth investing in a mattress protector for any new purchases so as to properly take care of them and ensure that they last as long as possible.
