The Iconic History of Tempur

The Iconic History of Tempur

You might sleep well on your Tempur mattress each night, but did you know that its comfort is all because of NASA?

It’s true! During the early 1970’s, NASA developed a revolutionary pressure-absorbing material to provide maximum support to astronauts during liftoff. Temperature sensitive and designed to evenly distribute weight, this material later became known as memory foam and was released by NASA scientists to the general public in the 1980s.

Scientists at Swedish company Fagerdala World Foams and Danish company Dan-Foam took the material and continued its development. After nearly a decade, the Tempur mattress was complete and was released to the public in 1991 to a resounding success.

Now providing support and comfort in over 96 countries worldwide, Tempur has since had to expand into North America, constructing an R&D and engineering centre in Duffield, Virginia and a fabrication plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The original research and development factory in Denmark has been expanded considerably to support the increasing demand for Tempur products.

Tempur now offers a wide range of pillows, headboards, and cushions. Their scientists continue to work on the ground-breaking material to this day, constantly refining and improving it to provide their customers with the ultimate product.

To try out a wide range of Tempur mattresses and products, head to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. Autumn/Winter 2017 Interior Trends

Autumn/Winter 2017 Interior Trends

Now that Autumn is in full swing it’s time to start getting our homes ready for the colder months. After all, spending time in the cosy warmth of your home is the best way to spend the dark, wintery evenings!

There are plenty of exciting trends to take note of this season, particularly:

Teal
Since Pantone made green the shade of 2017, there has been a wide range of variations on the colour, with teal and peacock blue being no exception. Perfect for bringing a jewel-toned elegance to any room, teal is an extremely versatile colour that can be easily mixed and matched with other shades on the spectrum or clashed with opposite colours to create a more dramatic finish. We love the teal shade of the Alstons Camden sofa, perfect for bringing this elegant trend into your home.

Metallics
You would have to be living under a rock to not have noticed the impact that copper and rose gold finishes have had over the last year or so, and this trend is set to continue into the winter. Think metallic lighting, cushions, and vases.

Big Knits
Nothing says comfy more than an oversized knitted blanket, so make the most of the big knit trend by creating your own chunky cable knit blanket or pouffe cover.

Fireplaces
Winter means spending a lot more time in front of the fire, so why not take inspiration from this season’s trend and glam your fireplace up with a fancy new guard.

Statement Chairs
One of the best things about this trend is that if you make the right choice, it will become a classic which will last through many future fashion fads. Think timeless design with a twist, such as a classic armchair in a bright geometric print.

For all of the latest trends in interiors, head into our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect furniture for your home.

Interior Design: Mixing Patterns & Texture

Interior Design: Mixing Patterns & Texture

One of the easiest ways to make a room look as though it was finished by an interior designer is to combine unusual patterns and textures. Though it might look easy, there are definitely ways to get this trend wrong, so try to keep these tips in mind next time you fancy giving your home a makeover:

Stick to a colour scheme

Mixing patterns and textures that share the same colour palette is the easiest way to bring this trend into the home. Blend big, bold patterns with smaller, more detailed ones to maximise the monotone effect. You can also pair mixed patterns containing similar colours with neutral textures for a more laid-back approach.

Use a feature wall

Feature walls can look dated if using block colours, so keep it fresh with a statement pattern. Use big, bold, and bright designs so that you can use smaller pieces to bring more emphasis to the style. Creating a focus on the one wall provides you with the perfect canvas for adding accent textures and patterns.

Layer patterns and textures

On larger areas of the room, such as the walls and floor, it’s a good idea to display bigger patterns and layer the look with textured rugs, patterned throws, feathery cushions, and luxurious curtains while making sure not to overwhelm the space. Limiting your patterns to three or four will help to keep it simple and prevent over-clashing.

Use furniture

Patterned upholstery will add another layer of interest to your room, keeping in the same colour scheme will help to unify the room. Check out our great range of sofas to help you bring patterns into your home. This great Alstons Camden Armchair would make a great addition to any pattern inspired room! Could Your Sofa Be Damaging Your Health?

Could Your Sofa Be Damaging Your Health?

Do you suffer from a bad back? Find it difficult to stand up from a seated position? Struggle to stand for long periods of time?

It turns out that you’re not the only one. An increasing amount of research indicates that chronic back pain is on the rise, with many people placing the blame on poorly made office chairs and a general lack of spine health awareness.

But did you know that sofas can be a huge contributor towards back problems as well?

Modern trends have led to an increase in demand for softer sofas with deeper cushions, which means that less emphasis is put onto the support needed for the spine and neck. This results in an unhealthy slouching position, which can cause long term health issues for users of the sofa. Sitting for too long in this position not only causes stress on the spinal ligaments but increases pressure on intervertebral discs, which in turn leads to the chronic suffering from aches and pains that many of us seek treatment for. As the average person spends an estimated 60% of their day sitting down, this problem will only get worse if not dealt with swiftly.

Spine surgeon Ketan Khurjekar says, "The human body is ergonomically designed. When we sit on slouchy and soft sofas, we disturb the normal curvature of the spine and body ergonomics. These comfy sofas are good for sitting for a short time, but sitting on them for a longer duration can cause pain in the spine."

So, how can you avoid incurring a mountain of physiotherapy bills further down the line? When choosing a new sofa, it is important that you consider how well it will support your back. Try to choose one which will provide optimum support for the neck and spine, rather than the one you feel is softest. The NHS advises that the best sitting position is one which supports your back and keeps your knees level with your hips.

High back, such as this Stressless Arion 3 seater, are a great choice as they provide excellent neck support. They are also fully adjustable, allowing you to move the headrest to the correct position for your neck and come with the patented Glide and Plus systems which respond to your body’s slightest movements. These sofas are particularly great for building custom home cinema seating and their timeless design means they won’t go out of style anytime soon! This sofa is also currently in the sale with just under £1,000 off!

Getting Your Home Ready for Autumn

Getting Your Home Ready for Autumn

Have you put the heating on yet? We certainly have! The cosiest time of the year is back and we can’t wait to start creating a warm and inviting space to come home to after a long autumn day, changes in the season are the perfect time to get creative with the interior while preparing the exterior for the colder, wetter months.

1. Tend to the chimney
If you are lucky enough to have a roaring fireplace for the family to gather around during the colder months, make sure the chimney has been professionally cleaned and cleared to avoid any chimney fires.

2. Get the boiler serviced
The last thing you need when temperatures hit rock bottom is for the boiler to give up the ghost. Arrange for your gas company to come and service the boiler before you start using it every day so that you can rest assured knowing that it is operating at its best for the coming months.

3. Check the gutters
We might have had a lovely summer, but that won’t have stopped debris collecting in the gutters and preventing water from flowing through them properly. Arrange for a professional gutter cleaning service or take a ladder and check them yourself to ensure that they are clear and ready to manage the wetter weather.

4. Create a home scent
Nothing quite beats arriving home after a long commute in the rain, but creating a personalised home scent to greet you as you walk through the front door might just make it that much more perfect.

5. Invest in rugs
Let’s face it, who wants to walk on cold floors with bare feet! Rugs are much cheaper than carpets, and you can update your look whenever you want.

6. Stock up on candles
Be prepared for any power outages with a stock of candles. You can also save on your electricity bill by having a cosy candlelit evening once a week.

7. Get your duvet cleaned
Before you switch your duvet over, take it out of storage and nip to the launderette to give it a spruce up for the coming months.

8. Organise your hallway
Muddy boots, panicked school runs, overflowing book bags; the hallway gets the most traffic in the house. Install labelled coat pegs and a designated area for each person’s shoes to keep it as orderly and stress-free as possible.

9. Update the sofa
Autumn means spending lots of time on the sofa getting cosy and keeping warm, so now is a great time to update yours!

How to Care for Wood Furniture

OLD CHARM LARGE SIDEBOARD

Nothing quite beats the feel and look of solid wood furniture in the home, and provided that you look after it properly, it can last for generations.

While regular dusting, waxing and polishing help to remove dirt and keep furniture looking great, the residue from polishes and waxes can build up over time, creating a thin layer of film which needs to be removed. So, what is the best way to care for wooden furniture?

Dusting

Frequent dusting is one of the best ways to quickly and efficiently remove dirt and grime. It is best to use clean, soft cloths or a feather duster to list and remove dust. To prevent the dust from scattering into the air and back onto the furniture, lightly spritz the duster with some water so that it attracts the particles and effectively removes them.  Feather dusters, lambs-wool dusters, lint-free cloths and terry towels are readily available in most supermarkets and are perfect for dusting wooden furniture as they are designed not to scratch the surface. Dust the furniture at least once a week to avoid build-up of dirt.

Light Cleaning

A light cleaning of the surface with a weak solution of gentle dish soap and water helps to lift and remove any dirt which has become lodged in the grain of the wood. Dip a soft cloth into the solution, wring the cloth to remove any excess water and wipe along the grain of the wood. Avoid using all-purpose cleaning sprays as these can leave a residue which can be tricky to remove. Aim to carry out a light cleaning of the wood at least once a month.

Deep Cleaning

For old or antique furniture, years’ worth of dirt and grime will require more of a deep clean. Soak a soft cloth in a solution of oil soap and water and work along the grain of the wood to remove the build-up. If you feel that the piece is still dirty, take some #0000 steel wool and dip into a specialist wood cleaning product, gently working along the grain of the wood to avoid scratching the surface. You may want to deep clean all wooden furniture at least once a year to keep them looking fresh and clean.

Protect

Finally, you will need to protect the wood. Using furniture oils will help to condition the piece, but will not offer much in the way of protection for the wood. Most commercial furniture polishes contain silicone oil which offers some protection to the surface, while clear furniture waxes provide a long-lasting finish as well as long-lasting protection. Apply a spoonful of wax to the surface and gently rub into the wood in circular motions. Wipe the excess wax from the surface with a clean cloth and then buff to a shine.

Hacks to Make Moving Home Easy

Taking off and moving to the country might seem like a wonderful idea, but the cycle of packing and organising starts it can soon become a complete nightmare. Unless you’re a minimalist, years of accumulated junk need to be waded through before you can even begin the process of loading precious items into boxes, so the process can feel as though it goes on for months. Then you have an added bonus of living out of suitcases and boxes while the imminent move day arrives, which can be a pretty taxing time.

With research indicating that moving home is more stressful than going through a divorce, we wanted to help take some of the pain out of your next move by offering you some tips and hacks on how to make life a little bit easier for yourself.

  1. Start in advance. Way in advance
This can even include collecting boxes and bubble wrap months, even years, before you need to move. Having a horde of packing apparatus will mean you can hit the ground running and save money on buying lots of new boxes when the time comes. Set aside at least 30-60 days before your move to start getting organized to make sure the move day goes smoothly.

  2. Purge, purge, and purge again
If you’ve only recently done a charity shop trip, the chances are you could probably fit in at least two more before you move. Really analyse everything in your home and decide if it is either sentimental or useful – if it is neither, it needs to go. Set up a car boot sale to get rid of nicknacks, sell clothes on eBay or list any large unwanted items on Gumtree for local collection.

  3. Create a room by room inventory
Go through each room and make a list of the contents that are being transported. This will help to organise your thoughts and make sure nothing gets lost.

  4. Ensure you have the right transportation
It might seem obvious, but there’s nothing worse than waiting for the van to arrive and finding out it isn’t big enough. Double check with the transportation company that you have definitely got the right size for the number of items you are looking to move.

  5. Label everything
Once everything is in boxes, it is difficult to know what is inside so make sure you properly label each box with the contents to avoid breakages and make unpacking easier at the other end.

  6. Invest in a good packing tape dispenser
Trying to cut packing tape with scissors or your teeth is not an advisable or time effective way of packing, grab yourself a good dispenser to make the job that little bit easier.

  7. Use small boxes
It might seem as though getting the biggest box and filling it to the top is the best way of cleaning a room, but when it comes to lifting that box it suddenly doesn’t seem like such a great idea. Using lots of smaller boxes will help to save your back and make packing them into the van much easier.

  8. Ask for help
Relying on the van driver to help you load your furniture and items is not a great move, especially if you have a lot of things. Call in favours from friends and family to make sure you have enough hands on deck come moving day.
