Indoor Plants: The Latest Interior Design Trend

Indoor Plants: The Latest Interior Design Trend

(Product in image: Stressless Skyline Chair and the Stressless Legend Sofa)

Whether you’re browsing Pinterest for home inspiration or window shopping at the stores in town, it’s hard to ignore the fact that plants are everywhere. From beautifully potted succulents to dramatic and imposing palms, it seems that plants are no longer just an afterthought and are now starting to take centre stage in the interior design process.

And why not! Bringing nature into your home is a great way to feel connected to the outside, add some colour, and even purify the air which is why they are now the most important accessory in finishing a room off.

But, don’t worry if you aren’t green fingered. There are plenty of super hardy plants that even the worst gardener can manage to keep alive, it’s just about picking the right one for you and your home, such as the fiddle leaf fig which requires minimal watering and upkeep. In fact, it’s essential to let the soil dry out between watering, so it’s a great plant for beginners or people who are busy. The rubber plant (image below) is another great example of this type of low maintenance option.

If you have a low light room, there are lots of plants who will relish living in the space. One of the most popular plants in the world for low light spaces is the philodendron. It’s a super-fast-growing vine that can be easily trained to climb a trellis just make sure to water it once a week. If you need a plant that can handle low light and neglect, then the ZZ plant (image below) is for you. This hardy little number can survive with very low light and minimal watering, yet it provides beautiful lush green foliage.

If you’re looking to purify the air in your home then get yourself a garden mum, perfect for removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and xylene from the air. Spider plants also excel at this and they are very easy to look after, just a light watering once in a while will keep this plant ticking over for ages. Peace lilies are also great at cleaning the air and are very easy to grow just make sure not to overwater them or have too many as the pollen from the flowers can irritate some people.

Finally, if you want some colour in your home then you need to choose a flowering plant. African violets are not just compact, but they come in a huge range of colours and varieties. Make sure you water it carefully and keep it in bright light for several blooms a year. Orchids are also beautiful flowering plants however they do require some serious upkeep, so make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for before you get one.

How to Improve the Air Quality in Your Home

How to Improve the Air Quality in Your Home

Think you are safe from pollutants and allergens inside your home? Think again. The air quality in your home can sometimes be worse than the air outside and given that we spend a lot of time inside, it’s definitely something that we need to address.

Not only does poor air quality make the house feel stuffy, but it can lead to all kinds of health issues, such as asthma and sickness.

So, what can you do to improve it?

Your first port of call is to keep all of the floors and surfaces clean and free from dust. Regularly hoovering will help to reduce the dirt on the floor and mopping will collect up any leftover particles. If you have carpets, consider vinyl or wooden flooring which are great for cease of cleaning and won’t harbour lots of dust.

If the walls haven’t been cleaned or decorated for a while, perhaps it’s time to give them a scrub with sugar soap and a fresh lick of paint. Air the room out during and after the application of any new paint and try using an odourless one to avoid any strong smells.

We all love to have our home smelling nice, but chemical air fresheners aren’t great for your health. Instead, use natural essential oils to freshen up your home and try to use natural cleaning products where possible.

Obviously, you can invest in a good quality air purifier to help out in some of the worst rooms, but others can be easily purified with the use of some good old house plants. NASA undertook a study in 1989 which found that certain houseplants, such as peace lilies, spider plants, Boston ferns, and ivy are great for cleaning the air and removing carcinogens such as formaldehyde and benzene.

Of course, one of the fastest ways to clear the air is to make it a smoke-free zone. There is now evidence to suggest that smoke from cigarettes gets into the walls and releases harmful third-hand chemicals over time. Just say no!

Finally, make all efforts to keep the humidity in your home to a minimum. Warm moisture leads to an abundance of mould spores, so keep rooms well-ventilated when you’re cooking, running the tumble drier, or taking a long shower.

Why You Need a Headboard

Why You Need a Headboard

(Image: Kingstown Nicole Headboard)

When it comes to designing the perfect bedroom, the bed is often the last thing to fall into place. After all, choosing the colour scheme and finishing touches is great fun so it can be easy to spend a lot of time thinking about them.

But, having the right headboard is arguably the most important factor in creating the perfect room! After all, you might not notice a headboard, but you certainly notice when a bed doesn’t have one.

This is because headboards provide a much-needed focal point in the bedroom. When a bed has a beautiful headboard, it looks finished and inviting. The headboard should complement the bed and room so that it doesn’t dominate the space but enhances it.

Another great reason to have a headboard is that they prevent the wall from getting marked and stained. Putting a barrier between you and the wall means that you have to redecorate much less often.

If you’ve ever woken up in the middle of the night wondering where your pillows have gone, then it is definitely time to get a headboard! They are a super-efficient way to keep your pillows in place and make sure that you get a great night’s sleep.

They are also a great way to support your back when reading at night. Leaning against the wall can mean that the bed gets pushed away, but the right headboard will prevent this from happening and ensure that you can read comfortably for as long as you like.

Headboards are available in such a wide range of materials, colours, and finishes, so there are plenty to choose from to work with the plans for your bedroom.

If you want to browse our great selection of beautiful headboards, head on down to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. 5 of The Best Walks in Weston-super-Mare

5 of The Best Walks in Weston-super-Mare

All of this gloriously warm weather means that there has never been a better time to get out of the house and go for a long walk!  And with studies showing that regular walks can improve your body and mind, there really is no excuse to stay inside.

Weston-super-Mare is packed with great places to stroll around while enjoying the sunshine, so here are our top 5 picks of the best places to go.

The Promenade

There is no better place to enjoy everything that Weston-super-Mare has to offer than the Promenade. Stroll along the golden sands with an ice cream as you breathe in the fresh sea air and soak up the glorious sunshine. The recent £29million transformation of the pier means that the paving is perfect for an amble, a skate, or a cycle along the front. Covering a distance of around 2 miles, this is perfect for those days when you just want to enjoy the beach.

Weston Woods

Covering an area of approximately 130 hectares, Weston Woods is a great spot for tailoring a walk to your needs. Whether you’re after a long stroll in the shade of the trees, or a short wander to a picnic spot, this local nature reserve is a must! Adventurous types can hike up the steep hills to the hill fort while wildlife fans can check out the vast array of butterflies flocking to the wild flowers.

Sand Point

One of the most stunning walks in Weston-super-Mare is the Sand Point circular coast walk. With views across the Bristol Channel to Wales and plenty of wildlife and archeological features to see, you are guaranteed to have a great time as you stroll along the coast. Averaging at around 3 miles, this is a great walk for dogs and children, but keep them close as there are some steep areas.

Blagdon Lake

If you’re looking to get out of town, head to Blagdon Lake, just outside of Weston-super-Mare. A recognised area of outstanding natural beauty (ANOB), Blagdon Lake covers an area of around 440 acres so there is plenty of space to explore and enjoy a picnic.

Brean Down

Another great spot just outside of town is the Brean Down coastal walk. With a rich history spanning prehistoric monuments to iron age forts, there is plenty to explore in this amazing area.  A natural pier with dramatic cliffs, Brean Down is well worth a visit or two in the warm weather!

5 Top Tips for Tidying

5 Top Tips for Tidying

If you’ve ever looked at the clutter around you and wondered how on earth you managed to collect so many things, then you are not alone! It turns out that most of us have hoarded piles of magazines, unwanted gifts, or unsuitable furniture at some point or another, it’s what makes us human. The trick is learning how to let it go and keep your space as tidy as possible. After all, a tidy space means a tidy mind!

So, where do you start when it seems as though there is so much to do?

1. Focus on categories
Instead of tackling each room, form a plan of action by separating the tasks into categories. For example, start by sorting out the clothes before moving onto paperwork. Organise the pantry and then go through all of your books.

2. Do you love it?
If you pick up an item and you don’t feel an immediate connection with it, then it’s time to let it go. Only keep items that are useful in a practical sense, or that have some kind of strong and irreplaceable sentimental value.

3. Learn to fold
Folding your clothes is a much more efficient way of storing them as they take up much less space than when they are hung in the wardrobe.

4. Do one load of laundry a day
Instead of seeing that huge pile of dirty clothes as an impossible mountain that needs climbing in one day, just stick to putting one load of washing on each morning or set your machine to delay so that it starts before you get home.

5. Set aside 10 minutes a day
Challenge the whole family to set aside just 1 minutes a day to stay on top of the household chores. This will mean that less time is needed to do them at the weekends so there will be more time to spend having fun! Ask the children to tidy their rooms or sweep the floor as you get on with sorting the laundry or the dishes.

How to Create a Relaxing Bedroom

How to Create a Relaxing Bedroom

Our bedrooms should be our sanctuary, an area reserved only for sumptuous slumber. However, turning our bedrooms from a place for repose into dual-purpose sleep and entertainment centre is becoming a common practice, even though this can impact negatively on your sleep pattern. Instead, keep it simple and make sure the bedroom is reserved for sleep. Here are some handy tips on how to ensure your bedroom is as relaxing as possible.

1. A comfortable bed
Picking the perfect bed is no easy task, we all have different tastes and preferences and especially if you’re sharing with a partner, finding the balance can be tricky. The most important thing is to recognise your likes and dislikes. Do you like a firm or soft mattress? Do you need allergenic pillows? Do you prefer a divan or a bedframe? Should you keep a winter and summer duvet to avoid overheating?

2. Aromatherapy
Bringing some candles or oil burners into the bedroom to fragrance the room before you retire can work wonders. You can either choose your favourite scent and relax into its warm embrace or you use one specifically designed to relax and induce sleep such as lavender.

3. Remove distraction

The bedroom must be a restful haven, in order to ensure it is a sanctuary for sleep try removing anything that might counteract that such as TVs and mobile phones. The blue light from phone or tablet screens is said to be especially disruptive and if at all possible they should be kept out of the bedroom.

4. Music
As mentioned, most distractions should be kept out of the bedroom; however, a little music can definitely help get you ready and relaxed. The benefits of delta wave music are far from scientifically confirmed, however it is deeply soothing and can definitely help you slip into beautiful and restoring sleep patterns.

5. Drift off
The hour before we go to sleep it is important to start shutting down with light and easy activities. Things like reading are perfect but as mentioned the light from a tablet or phone is not ideal so keeping it old school with an actual book is best. Perhaps you can keep some of your favourites on a bedside table?

Top Tips for Cleaning Rugs

Top Tips for Cleaning Rugs

Rugs are not just a great way to bring a room together, they are also super easy to clean yourself! With the right tools and method, you can get your rug as clean as the day you bought it.

The best time to clean rugs is in the summertime as it gives you plenty of outside space to work in. Check the weather forecast to make sure that there isn’t any rain predicted (you’ll still be taking your chances in the UK!), then set aside an area in the garden to use for cleaning. It’s best to avoid the grass as it will end up pretty muddy!

Next, hang some strong rope between two sturdy fence posts or trees so that you can hang your rug out to dry.

Before you take your rug outside, hoover it thoroughly on both sides to remove as many dirt and dust particles as you can.

Take the rug outside and hang it over the rope, then beat it with the handle of a broom to get rid of any dirt that’s left.

Once you have tested the shampoo on a corner of the rug, soak the rug with water then apply the shampoo to the entire surface.

Using a scrubbing brush, work the shampoo into the rug and focus on any heavily stained areas.

Leave the shampoo for as long as the directions indicate, then rinse with clean water.

Now it’s time to try and get as much water out of the rug as possible before you hang it up to dry. Using a squeegee, push the excess water to the edges of the rug until there is nothing left.

Hang the rug over the rope and leave in the sunshine to dry. If it’s not completely dry before the end of the day, consider moving it to the garage to finish it off.

Once it’s dry, bring the rug back into the house and enjoy the clean, fresh feeling of your beautiful floor!

The Benefits of Vinyl Flooring

The Benefits of Vinyl Flooring

Looking for a hardwearing, low maintenance flooring? While hardwood and laminate are great choices, vinyl flooring is one of the best alternatives on the market. With more and more budget-conscious homeowners choosing vinyl, we take a look at some of the benefits of using this great flooring.

Cost
One of the least expensive options to buy and install, vinyl offers an affordable alternative to replacing entire floors.

Installation
Not only is it a cheaper option, but installing vinyl is a relatively fast and easy process so your room won’t be inaccessible for long.

Comfort
While other flooring options can be cold on the feet in the winter, vinyl is a much warmer option. Also, you have the option of adding a layer of soft padding underneath the vinyl for an even more comfortable finish.

Maintenance
Vinyl is super easy to clean and just needs regular hoovering and mopping with a mild detergent to keep it looking like new.

Durability
A great choice for high traffic rooms, vinyl stands up to daily footfall without showing signs of wear and tear.

Waterproof
A fully water-resistant material, vinyl provides a great moisture-proof floor covering for any rooms that might experience damp, such as the bathroom or kitchen.

Design
One of the things that vinyl is less known for is the versatility in its design. Not only can you get vinyl in just about any colour or pattern that you want, you can also opt for the look and texture of a natural wood floor without the cost.
