5 Steps to Organising Your Home

5 Steps to Organising Your Home

Every now and then the hustle and bustle of daily life takes over and organisation takes a back seat amidst the chaos. From piles of ironing to drawers stuffed with forgotten bills and pens that no longer work, creating order in the mayhem can sometimes feel like a monumental task that just isn’t as appealing as basking in the glorious spring sunshine.

But it doesn’t have to take much effort to get your house back on the right path. With just a few simple tips you can take control back of the areas that bug you and make them so organised that you won’t have to worry about them falling into chaos ever again!

1. Identify clutter hotspots

Take a pad and paper and go to each room in the house, noting exactly where the clutter tends to pile up. Are there piles of shoes by the front door? Unopened letters on the kitchen top? Drawers filled with junk? Make a note of each clutter hotspot so that you know where to target when you tackle each room.

2. Find a solution

Next, think about how you can solve each issue that you have identified on your list. If you find that coats are being slung over the bannister, perhaps it’s time to install some coat pegs or get a coat stand to put by the front door. Place a filing system next to where post is opened so that it can be put away once dealt with and keep on top of laundry by reducing the number of clothes in it. Which brings us nicely on to…

3. De-clutter

It is a great feeling when you manage to remove most of the clutter clogging up your home. Not only does it make you feel more organised mentally, but it leaves your home feeling bigger and brighter. Be ruthless, anything that hasn’t been used or worn in the last 6 months should be donated to charity, sold, recycled, or thrown away.

4. Deep clean

Once everything has been de-cluttered and storage solutions have been identified, give each room a thorough clean. From the walls to the curtains, giving each room a deep clean will encourage you to keep it organised.

5. Stay on top of it

Now the hard part is out of the way you should be left feeling with a sense of satisfaction at your hard work and productivity! Try to avoid clutter piling up again by making sure that things are put away after they have been used and implementing your new storage solutions.

How to Spring Clean the Outside of Your House

How to Spring Clean the Outside of Your House

With the return of the sun, there’s no better time than to give your home a fresh lick of paint, a tidy, and some a new energy. It’s not just inside the home that you can make renovation though, as the outside deserves just as much attention! Embrace the season and spend some time in the sunshine making your home as appealing on the outside as it is on the inside.

1. A Warm Welcome

If first impressions are anything to put stock in, then the front of your house should be a statement. Give your front door a little bit of attention to instantly make your home feel brand new. Whether you pick a bold new colour, polish the fittings or freshen up with a with a new door altogether, your front door is the gateway to your home and should be the first port of call. It can be as simple as a new knocker or a seasonal spring wreath.

2. Green thumbs

Spring is in full bloom and there is no finer time than to get out in the gardens and pay them a little TLC. Give your lawn some attention and trim back any unruly growth that has occurred, before planting some beautiful flowers or bushes to expand the palette of colour. If you’re not blessed with the greenest of fingers, then try a few planters that are a little easier to upkeep and organise. Whatever you do, whether it be in the front or the rear of the house, be sure keep the garden buzzing with bee-friendly foliage.

 3. A Social Spot

Expand into the garden with a new set of chairs and a gathering point in the garden to ensure you’re equipped to take advantage of the weather on those sunny days. After you’ve put in so much work upping the curbside appeal of your home it would be a shame to not be ready to fully enjoy the fruits of your labour.

4. Spring Cleaning

It isn’t just the inside of the home that needs a yearly deep clean, so there’s no better time than now to get out there and give your home a scrub down. Remember to clean out the gutters, windows, roof, and any other fascia of your home to keep it fresh and happy.

Once you’re done with the outside of your home, head on down to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare, or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and the dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.

Creative Ways to Add More Storage

Creative Ways to Add More Storage

As homes are getting smaller, storage space is at a premium. Whether you have a tiny apartment or just can’t find the space to squeeze in a few more shelves, then it’s time to start thinking creatively about the space you do have.

1. Divan bed

Forget about dust balls! Divans are perfect for utilising the space underneath the bed. The drawers allow for tons of sheet storage space, freeing up your airing cupboard for other items.

2. Storage chest

If you have lots of knick-knacks that need a home, then beautifully designed storage chests are the way forward. Not only do they look great, but they will add so much storage to any room in the home.

3. Ottomans

Footstools are such a versatile piece of furniture. Perfect for putting our feet up after a long day, they also work well as extra seating and, if you get one with under-lid storage, they also add much needed storage space.

4. Stairs

The space under the stairs is often neglected, but could it be used for a better purpose in your home? Adding a chest of drawers or a display cabinet is a great way to add more storage without impacting on the rest of the space.

5. Shelving

The chances are, you already have shelves up, but there are plenty of other places they could go! Look at building shelving into recesses or utilising the space near the ceiling.

6. Doors

The back of doors is a great place to hang baskets or bags for extra toys or crafting supplies.

How to Choose the Perfect Bed

How to Choose the Perfect Bed

We spend a lot of time in bed, about a third of our lives if we’re getting the recommended amount of sleep. Picking the bed that’s right for you is a big commitment. We’ve put together some helpful tips to help you sleep soundly on the bed of your dreams.

1. Road test

Technology has come a long way and while the internet affords us a great wealth of information and convenience, it will never be a supplement for physical testing. If you need a good place to start and you’re near Weston Super-Mare, come on down to our showrooms and we’ll point out some of our favourite beds for a cheeky afternoon nap.

2. Frame

Your mattress and bedframe should work as a team; spring mattresses go well with spring beds, slats go better with foam. When you’re buying a new bed it’s a good idea to buy a new mattress at the same time as both will last longer this way. Whilst your frame should be chosen on size and aesthetic appeal, the mattress should be chosen on your needs and with comfort first and foremost.

3. Storage

For most people, storage is a top priority rather than a luxury. The space under the bed is prime storage, and many frames and beds come with built-in options to make the most of reclaiming that space. Whether you use it as a convenient spot for your sheets and linens or as extra space for jammies and underwear, it’s a space that shouldn’t be wasted.

If you want to browse our fantastic selection of beds head on down to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and the dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.

Easy Ways to Bring Spring into Your Home

Easy Ways to Bring Spring into Your Home

Winter might be lasting a little longer than usual this year, but we’ve finally made it through the snow and you can hear the birds chirping the announcement of spring for real this time. With that in mind, we’ve put together a few easy tips to help you put the spring back in your step and spruce up your home for the season.

The living room is where we spend the majority of our time and usually where we welcome and entertain our guests, so is usually the first port of call when doing a little spring cleaning. You can transform the room and make it as fresh as the dew-speckled grass with a few simple little tricks.

Whilst heavy fabrics such as silk, tweed and velvet work year-round, you can breathe a new life into the room by replacing your cushions with a spring selection, much like we do our own wardrobes. Working within a bright colour scheme you can use lighter fabrics to match the season such as cotton or linen and uplift the room with little to no effort at all.

Spring is the season when everything is fresh, new and green and so there is no finer time than now to grab some statement vases like this beautiful metallic rose tinted glass vase and fill them with whatever bold piece of verdant loveliness you so choose; this cream tulip stems perhaps? Fitting in perfectly on the dining table, coffee table or even bedside cabinets, invite the season into your home.

Sometimes you don’t have to buy something new at all to give a room a completely fresh feeling. Try rearranging your furniture to achieve instant gratification and a quick energy boost. If space is limited and rearranging isn’t possible, give the room a thorough clean by moving heavy furniture such as the sofa and cleaning underneath and around it.

Finally, another way to brighten up the season is to bring in some new colour. Perhaps a brightly coloured runner rug or a new piece of art hung on the wall. A bold splash of something vibrant can bring a lot of light and life to a room.

If you want to do something a little more drastic and are in the market for some entirely new furniture head to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.

Top Tips for Decorating Your Hallway

Top Tips for Decorating Your Hallway

Whether you have a small city apartment, a sprawling manor in the country, or somewhere modest in between, there’s no doubt about the impact of a hallway on a home. After all, it is the first place you enter when you get in from a long day as well as where you greet your visitors. Your hallway sets the tone for the rest of the house which is why it’s super important to show some love to this often-neglected room.

The first thing to remember when decorating your hallway is that it needs to be as functional as it is stylish. Coats, bags, shoes, keys, post – all manner of things end up getting dumped here so your first port of call is to plan the storage that you’ll need. From coat racks to filing systems for incoming mail, work out what you regularly use the space for and the best ways of organising the things that end up here.

Neutral colour schemes work best in hallways as light colours enhance a space and help to create the illusion of more height and width. If you want to add colour, hang your favourite artworks on the wall to make a great first impression.

When it comes to the floor, natural flooring such as wood or stone work well as they are hard wearing which is ideal for a high traffic area, but tiles and vinyl work equally as well. Add a brightly coloured runner rug to draw the eye down the hallway and add a sense of depth.

To bounce light around the space, use mirrors placed along the hallway. This will also help to make the space feel much larger and give you somewhere to check your outfit before you leave the house.

Lighting is often forgotten about in the hallway, leaving one pendant light to serve the whole of the space. Unfortunately, this does not make a hallway feel particularly welcoming, so add lighting by way of a lamp placed on a console table

Finally, for an instant way of adding colour and life to your hallway, display some plants on your console table. As an added bonus they will also help to keep the air clean!

For the perfect essential furniture for your hallway, head to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.

Whether you’re moving to a new build or an older property, storage is always something that all homes can use more of. Wardrobes with drawers are perfect for saving space in homes that are on the smaller side, while wardrobes with mirrors will help to bounce light around the room and make it feel bigger.

3. Sofa bed

It's Time to Think About Spring Cleaning

It's Time to Think About Spring Cleaning

After a long winter that never seemed to end, the daffodils are finally blooming, the sun is shining, and we actually managed to get some washing dry on the line this week! It can only mean that spring is right around the corner, so now is a great time to start thinking about throwing the windows open, getting rid of the winter cobwebs, and giving your home a deep clean in preparation for the warmer months.

If you are thinking about setting aside some time to get your home in order this weekend, here are our top tips to get you on your way.

Create a checklist for each room

Create a simple checklist for each room to make sure you cover all of your bases. Start at the top of each room and work down to create a structured plan of attack. Keep this for next year, adding the time each job took, to allow you to hone your spring clean schedule year on year.

De-clutter

Stark minimalism isn't everyone’s bag and doesn't really scream of a cosy lived-in home, however, this is the time to get rid of, or store away, items that haven't been used much, if at all, for months. Rule of thumb tends to be: if it hasn't been used since this time last year, it can probably go in the loft, under the stairs or to the local charity shop.

Floors and walls

The largest visual spaces in your home are the floors, ceilings and walls. Ceilings can be brushed and vacuumed, and walls come up well with the same process plus a light wash over with warm water and a little dish soap. Carpets and rugs should be cleaned with carpet cleaning equipment to bring up a winter’s worth of dirt and grime.

Fully utilise the dishwasher

You will be amazed at what you can use your dishwasher for. Combs & hairbrushes, plastic toys, pet food/water bowls, trainers and even golf balls can be cleaned to a sparkling standard whilst leaving you free to tick a few more items off of your list as it cycles through.

Head to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.
