Creative Tips for Decluttering Your Home

Anyone with an overflowing wardrobe or chaotic cupboards understands the stress caused by piles of mess. Clutter makes it harder to find things, concentrate, organise your thoughts, and generally live an easy life, so why do we insist on keeping so much of it around?
One study found that we form less of an attachment to our homes and more of an attachment to the possessions we fill it with, which can lead us to clinging on to an overabundance of objects which we feel represent us. Unfortunately, this overabundance can eventually chip away at our well-being, as we begin to feel as though we are drowning in a sea of stuff.

Luckily, the solution is straightforward, if a little time-consuming. While it can feel slightly daunting to finally tackle the amount of clutter in your home, take comfort in the knowledge that once you start, you will find it difficult to stop. Decluttering has been proven to improve mood, boost concentration, and encourages you to focus on future goals.

So where do you start?

  1. If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of clutter in your home, break the task down. Take one room and concentrate on one area at a time, for example, tackling that drawer of old batteries and takeaway menus that everyone seems to have in the kitchen is a good start. If the drawer isn’t too bad, move on to do the whole room.
  2. Put every piece of paper that comes into your home through the FF test. If it can’t be filed (bills, statements, important documents) or framed (children’s paintings), it goes in the bin. Invest in a dedicated filing box or system which allows you to put important paperwork away as soon as it arrives, but keeps it easily accessible.
  3. Be selective about which books you want to keep on your bookshelf. If you’ve read them or have no intention of reading them, think about passing them on to a charity shop or selling them on Amazon so that someone else can have the benefit. Aim to keep 10% of each shelf bare so that you make the most of your decluttering.
  4. Keep children’s toys in easily accessible baskets or boxes and teach them how to clear up at the end of each day. Donate any toys they do not use to the charity shop or children’s hospital to keep the clutter down.
  5. Take a merciless approach and fill a bin bag with stacks of old magazines, broken items which have yet to be repaired, old bedding that you no longer use, out of date food, half-finished craft projects, clothes that don’t fit, stockpiles of carrier bags and toiletries you will never use.
  6. Think about whether each item in your home has a use. If it is ornamental, consider getting rid of it unless it has sentimental value. Anything that collects dust and has no specific purpose is working against your decluttering aims.

The Iconic History of Parker Knoll

Parker Knoll Burlington

We carefully select the most beautifully made furniture to make quality and style available to all our customers. This approach has led us to stock Parker Knoll, one of the market leaders in furniture design and construction. With a heritage spanning over three centuries, Parker Knoll have a wonderfully long and rich heritage which is evident in their classically timeless and elegant pieces.

In 1869, Frederick Parker set up the first incarnation of Parker Knoll after learning how to design and develop the finest furniture from his father, a cabinet maker. Parker passed his skills down to his sons, who continued to develop the business. In 1921, Parker’s sons met Willi Knoll, a revolutionary in furniture design, who invented the coiled steel wire spring which is still used in many chairs to this day. The parties merged their businesses to form Parker Knoll, as we now know it.

By 1932, Parker Knoll had steadily developed a reputation for their fine craftsmanship, quality furniture, and excellent design. Their chairs were chosen to furnish the studios of the new BBC headquarters at Portland Place, while in 1936 King Edward VIII abdicated the throne while sitting in a Parker Knoll armchair.

The success of the Parker Knoll Penshurst Chair led to the continued development of the design during the 1950s. During the 1960s, Parker Knoll began the development of the revolutionary Recliner Chair, which was the first of its kind to hit the market in the UK and led to a huge change in the furniture industry.

The Parker Knoll factory was destroyed by a huge fire in 1970, however, the business bounced straight back with upholsterers starting work at a new location just 3 weeks later. The newly designed Statesman Chair was debuted at the Annual Furniture Exhibition and soon after became a huge interior design hit.

Continuing to lead the UK furniture market, Parker Knoll eventually exhibited at the prestigious Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2014, launching exclusive new collections to the international market.

For timeless designs which last the test of time, you can’t go wrong with a Parker Knoll suit – particularly when they are available with a whopping 25% off!

2017 Interior Design Solution: Faux Materials

There is a fine line between timeless and trendy. Up until this century, faux materials and finishes tended to walk that fine line, with most of the results falling firmly in the trendy category. Anyone remember the rag-rolled and sponge painted finishes of the 90s? They have not aged well.

However, as technology advanced and design evolved, faux materials and finishes were given a whole new lease of life. Materials such as engineered quartz or faux leather are now almost indistinguishable from the original versions and in some cases, are cheaper and more practical. Faux wooden ceiling beams, for example, won’t break the bank or bow like real wood, while engineered quartz can withstand heat and acidic foods better than Carrara marble

Low-maintenance flooring is another advantage of the leap forward in faux technology, with the sticky, unattractive vinyl of the 70s making way for sleek, stylish, timeless designs which are hardwearing and easy to maintain. Timber-look floor tiles are also making a name for themselves as they can be used in difficult areas such as wet rooms. They are also compatible with under-floor heating systems and are a fraction of the cost of real wood flooring. Not to mention that they are more scratch and stain resistant than their real counterparts.

Faux foliage is also making a comeback, but not in the obvious, plastic way that we have been previously used to. Fake grass and plants now look so lifelike they are often mistaken for the real thing, which make them ideal for those looking for low maintenance, cheaper alternative.

With affordable faux solutions upping their game, is no wonder that architectural accents such as embossed brick wall panels and imitation stone counter tops are now increasingly popular choices for home renovations. With more and more budget friendly alternatives available, isn’t it time you upgraded to the latest faux trends?

Top Tips for a Clean Mattress

We all know the importance of flipping the mattress every now and again, but did you know how important it is to clean your bed surface as well? Our mattresses can become sponges for pollen, sweat, and oils, and if you are unlucky enough you could even find a bed bug or two lurking in its creases. Don’t worry too much though, if you adopt a regular mattress cleaning habit these problems can be minimised and, in some cases, completely avoided.

It might sound obvious but before you start cleaning you need to strip the bed and wash your sheets on the hottest setting that their labels allow as this will deodorise them and remove any unwanted visitors. Tumble drying them on a hot setting will kill any remaining dust mites loitering in the threads.

  • Hoover the surface
Dig out the upholstery attachment and get to work hoovering the surfaces of the mattress. Start at one end and methodically work your way to the other to make sure you have covered every inch of the surface.
  • Deodorise it
To remove any musty smells, you need to head to your kitchen cupboard and grab some baking soda. Lightly sprinkle a layer all over the surface and gently rub in with a small bristle brush. Leave this to work its magic for at least 15 minutes, longer if you have a particularly smelly mattress.
  • Hoover again
Once the baking soda has absorbed the smells, oils, and moisture from the top layer of the mattress, it’s time to use the hoover to draw it all out. Use the same technique as before, methodically working your way from one side to the other.
  • Deal with stains
There are lots of methods to remove stains, depending on what kind of stains you are dealing with. Remove spot stains with a dilute dish detergent, remembering not to apply too much liquid. For bigger stains, apply a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the area and blot with a clean cloth. For any difficult to remove stains, try applying baking soda after the detergent and leave for several hours.
  • Turn it over and repeat
Repeat all the cleaning steps above with the underside of the mattress. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's guidelines for flipping the mattress, though it is worth remembering that most mattresses need to be turned at least 4 times a year.
  • Air it
It’s a good idea to leave your mattress to get some air flowing through it to help remove any remaining moisture and banish any lingering odours. Once you have thoroughly cleaned both sides of the mattress, prop it up against the wall and leave the windows of the room open for as long as possible. Try to do this at least every couple of months.

The Iconic History of G Plan

We are proud to stock some of the most beautifully crafted furniture in the country, such as the highly recognisable G Plan range. An iconic furniture brand which has lasted the test of time due to their ability to design and craft high quality, stylish furniture that can be passed down through the generations.

G Plan - 'Relax It's a G Plan' - TV Advert 2016/17:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU1IXNa6tV8

G Plan has a long and rich heritage, traceable back to 1898 when the legendary Ebenezer Gomme began handcrafting exquisite furniture. When furniture rationing was introduced in 1943, the Board of Trade set up a Utility scheme which limited the design of furniture, by the time this scheme ended in 1952, the demand for original, stylish furniture was at an all-time high.

Ebenezer’s grandson, Donald, continued the family tradition of quality handcrafted furniture when he started the G Plan brand in 1953. He wanted to produce a range of pieces which could be bought and collected separately and over time, according to budgets. Donald marketed the furniture through advertisements in magazines and at the cinema, eventually setting up showrooms such as The G Plan Gallery in Hanover Square, London where people could come and view the available items.

As mid-century modern styles developed during the 1960s, Danish inspired interior design became the height of contemporary fashion. In response to potential competition from Danish brands, G Plan released one of its most iconic ranges; the Danish Modern range, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen.

Though the Gomme family retired from the business in the 1980s, the G Plan brand continues to thrive to this day, and their beautifully upholstered sofas are available in our showroom in Weston-super-Mare. What’s more, they are currently in our summer sale!

You can’t go wrong with a G Plan suite, particularly when they are offered with a whopping 30% off!

The Benefits of Investing in Handmade Furniture

Alstons Cambridge Sofa

The furniture we choose not only provides a functional quality to our homes, it also conveys our personality and style and adds warmth, character and comfort to the space it occupies.

Having bespoke, custom or handcrafted furniture brings a sense of individuality and means the space can be used to its full advantage. However, as we now live in an age where convenience is king, the trend for mass-produced, disposable furniture offers an appealing quick solution to those looking for new pieces. So, why buy handcrafted when cheap furniture is so readily available?

1)      It lasts

It seems obvious but a well-crafted solid oak dining set is much more likely to stand the test of time and be handed down through generations than a flimsy MDF table. Look at how furniture has passed down as heirlooms throughout history, handcrafted pieces can last for hundreds of years if taken care of properly.

2)      It is competitive on price

Quality craftsmanship pays for itself a thousand times over as it results in furniture pieces which will not require replacing every few years.

3)      It is unique

High quality, handcrafted furniture tends to have a timeless appeal which transcends fashions over time, meaning that it will always look perfect in your home. Using the skills of a craftsman means your furniture is more likely to be unique and original in comparison with other mass-produced furniture on the market.

4)      Customised style and size

Choosing handmade furniture means that you can call the shots when it comes to the size and style of the piece you are after. Fancy a different fabric on that amazing sofa? A smaller size? A high shine or distressed finish? The great thing about custom furniture is that you can adapt the furniture to the needs and style of your home.

5)      Less likely to suffer defects

Machine produced furniture tend to encounter occasional defects during production. As a machine cannot provide the attention to detail that a craftsman can, it is easier for defects to slip by unnoticed, only for you to discover them when it is too late.

Whether you prefer a more rustic look, or sleek contemporary styles, pop in to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff about our handmade furniture. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect handmade furniture for any room in your home.
