How to Create Storage Space in Tiny Homes

Small homes and apartments can mean a whole host of storage problems. Reducing possessions is one way to solve the problem, but thinking creatively about a space can improve the amount of storage available. We take a look at some of the best tips for creating storage space in tiny homes.

Think vertically.
Using the empty space above kitchen cabinets is one way of maximising your storage. While it may be hard to reach, having a set of steps handy will help you overcome this. Only keep items which are rarely used in this space to reduce the amount of times you need to access it. Clearly label them so you can see the contents without reaching up to rummage around to find what you are looking for.

High shelves in the lounge or dining areas provide space to store books as well as deceiving the eye into thinking the room is larger.

Doors are great for creating extra storage
, hanging toys and towels behind them in neat baskets and bags will keep your space tidy and provide you with somewhere to put items. Use the back of kitchen doors to hang produce or tea towels so that you can free up the worktop space.

Maximise space underneath the stairs
by adding a small worktop, shelving or seating area. Think creatively about where to add shelving and extra storage, such as around doorways and in recesses.

Invest in lots of heavy duty hooks
and hang them all over the kitchen, hallway and bedrooms. These will provide excellent storage for hats, coats, cups, saucepans, and utensils, freeing up cupboard space and reducing the need for clunky coat stands in the hallway. It’s also possible to hang baskets from strong hooks, providing you with storage for toiletries in the bathroom or spices and sauces in the kitchen.

Be clever with furniture
, choose pieces which can be folded away when not in use, such as gate leg tables, or items which have more than one purpose, such as storage ottomans. Sofa beds also provide a great way of doubling up furniture use, particularly for homes which do not have a guest room, while divan beds provide the master bedroom with plenty of storage space for linen, towels and clothing.

Tips for Maintaining a Vinyl Floor

Perth

Vinyl floors are experiencing something of a comeback. Gone are the tatty old fashioned styles of the 80s, replaced with beautifully modern, hardwearing, stain resistant and easy to maintain designs. Now available in a huge range of styles, there is a vinyl floor out there for everyone. Once you’ve chosen your ideal vinyl, it’s a good idea to follow these simple tips to keep your beautiful new floor looking crisp, clean and fresh for as long as possible.

Invest in some protective felt pads to place underneath heavy furniture. This will avoid any unsightly indents appearing in the floor which are difficult to remove once furniture has been moved.

Remove dirt and dust with a broom or hoover on a daily basis, though remember to put the hard floor setting on the hoover to prevent any damage. This will prevent any long-term build-ups of grime on the floor which could be hard to remove.

At least once a week, clean the floor with a mop and pH neutral detergent. You might want to do this more regularly if you have pets or children running around. Remember not to saturate or soak the floor, it will only need a relatively small amount of water to effectively remove dirt and grime.

If you are planning on moving any heavy furniture over the floor, place wooden boards along the pathway you intend to move it through. This will protect the floor from any scuffs or damage as the furniture is moved.

Place natural doormats at the entrance of the house to collect dirt and prevent it from being brought through to the rest of the house.

Avoid using detergents, abrasive cleaners or solvent based polishes on the floor as these can cause damage. If your new floor is no-wax, avoid using any wax-based cleaners or polishes on it as it will leave a residue which will be tricky to remove.

If you are looking for help finding the perfect vinyl floor, pop in to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect floor for your home.

How Often Should a Bed Be Replaced?

Reylon Aurora

As we spend an average of 25 years sleeping, it’s very important that our beds are up to the monumental task of keeping us comfortable and relaxed! Beds play a key part in our mental and physical well-being, so it is vital that you take the best possible care of your bed.

Regularly turning the mattress should increase its longevity, while investing in a decent mattress protector will keep dust, mites, and bugs at bay. Hoovering and spot cleaning any spills or stains will also keep it in good condition, while letting the bed “air” every few weeks will help to reduce or remove any musty smells.

But, even with the best cleaning techniques in the world, all beds need replacing at some time or another. The Sleep Council recommend that you replace your bed every 7 years, even if it looks in good condition. This is because it may not be offering the support your body needs to get the best night’s sleep as it will have endured over 20,000 hours of wear and tear during that time. Given that we sweat half a pint of fluid every night and shed a pound of dead skin cells every year, our mattresses may end up harbouring all manner of horrendous surprises.

If you find that you are not sleeping as well as you used to, or that you are waking feeling stiff and achy, it might be that your mattress has come to the end of its useful life. When a mattress stops giving proper support, it dips in the middle, squeaks when you move, or you can feel springs poking through, these are all signs that it is time to invest in a new bed.

It is recommended that bases are replaced at the same time as mattresses, as these will have also endured the same amount of wear and tear. Bases and mattresses from different manufacturers may not fit perfectly together, which will reduce the longevity of your new bed. It is worth investing in a mattress protector for any new purchases so as to properly take care of them and ensure that they last as long as possible.

If you are looking for help finding your new bed, pop in to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect bed for your home.

Creating Light in Dark Rooms

Anyone who is hit hard by the darker months already knows that getting as much natural light into a room as possible can make or break how you feel. Bright, airy rooms have a more positive effect on us than a dark and dreary one, but what do you do if there isn’t much natural light coming into your room to begin with?

Don’t worry, it is possible to enhance the existing natural light in a room without knocking down any walls. To do this, you may need to have a re-think about the style and design of your room.

Simply painting the ceiling white can have a huge impact on the amount of light in the room. White paint will reflect light into the room, rather than absorbing it. Soft cream and magnolia colours on the walls are great for creating a warm glow in the space. Specialist paint products on the market contain light reflecting particles to help the light bounce around even more.

Glass and mirrored furniture is another way to help light transition around the space, while strategically placed mirrors will double any light coming in through the window.

Amalfi Glass Coffee Table

If you have a dark wooden floor, try to brighten it with a light-coloured rug or consider investing in a new flooring altogether.

Don’t forget to give the windows a good clean, inside and out. You would be surprised at the amount of grime that can collect on them in a short space of time! This blocks out any natural light trying to come through the window.

Trim back shrubbery which could also be preventing light from entering the room and remove heavy curtains, to be replaced with a light, airy roller blind.

Try to avoid dark furniture and stick with light-coloured pieces to help create a sense of space and warmth. You can add splashes of darker colours by way of cushions and ornaments, but try to limit them as much as possible as the aim is to create as much light as possible!

Hang glass pendant light fixtures to bounce light around and consider picking up a selection of floor lamps, table lamps and candles to add more light to the space.

If you are looking for help decorating a dark space, pop into our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect furniture for your home.

2017 Interior Design Trend: Texture

Along with Pantone’s colour green, texture is one of 2017’s biggest interior design trends. The feel of furniture adds a powerful depth to any room and means you are not confined to simple visual elements such as line and colour.

When planning the design of a space, it’s easy to get caught up in the colour scheme and forget about texture. Think about how a piece of furniture feels when you are planning how you would like to decorate. After all, the fundamental sense of touch is not only a powerful way for our brains to gather information about the space we are in, but it can also have a therapeutic effect on us. Surrounding yourself with soft knits, plush velvets, smooth leather and polished wood will not only bring style to your room but may actually have a calming effect on you.

Mixing textures is a sure-fire way to bring new dimensions to schemes relying on one colour group. Using a neutral or one-colour base allows you to work with a variety of different textured furniture, and means you can make a room as cosy as possible.

G Plan Atlanta

The sleek and stylish feel of this G Plan leather sofa is the perfect backdrop for contrasting plush cushions or large chunky blankets. The contemporary feel of the design means it would work well in a modern room, though as shown in the picture above, it also works well with a mid-century modern room.

Coxmoor Oak Bench

Made from solid oak, this Coxmoor wooden bench is perfect for adding rustic charm and texture. Arrange colourful satin cushions or plaid fabrics to bring an extra dimension to this great piece of furniture, which is currently in the sale for just £89! Get yours from our showroom in Weston-super-Mare while stocks last.

ASPEN Rug by Mastercrafts

It’s easy to overlook the floor when creating your textured space. Chunky, warm rugs with a deep shaggy pile such as this ASPEN rug are the perfect way to bring a cosy depth to your room.

Alstons Modern Collection

The plush velvet feel of the Camden Snuggler is perfect for curling up with a good book. The texture is inviting and cosy while remaining stylish and modern. Mix it up by pairing it with a brushed metal side table, or rustic wooden furniture to make the textures pop.

Amalfi Glass Table Nest

Glass is a great way to help light bounce around the room while creating the illusion of more space. We adore the smooth feel of these beautiful Amalfi tables, which would perfectly complement rustic wooden lamps or metal vases. These tables are currently available at our showroom in Weston-super-Mare for only £129.

Top Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Home

With the weather hit highs of 23 degrees this weekend, now is the perfect time to throw open the windows and give your home a good spring clean! Even the cleanest of houses accumulate dust and grime over the winter period, so why not spend a day tackling the darkest corners of your home to leave it sparkling and fresh for the new season. We’ve put together a list of our top tips for getting your spring cleaning done this weekend:

  • Start at the top
The most effective way to clean is to start at the top of a room and work down to make sure any cobwebs and dust are removed.
  • Use homemade cleaners
If you suffer from hay fever or other allergies, making your own cleaning products is a great way to avoid any reactions or flare-ups. Using baking soda and vinegar recipes can be just as effective as using store-bought products.
  • Beat rugs
Taking removable floor coverings outside and giving them an airing in the sunshine will help to remove any stale smells accumulated over winter. Take a broom and give them a good beating to shake out any dust and particles the hoover might have missed.
  • Don’t forget the carpets
Spring is a great time to clean carpets as they can take a while to dry. Use a carpet shampoo or hire a carpet cleaner to remove the built-up dirt, then open the windows to help speed up the drying process.
  • Seal hard floors
Applying wax or sealers to hard floors will give them a shine and help them stay protected for another year.
  • Tackle cabinet doors
Grease from cooking can build up on cabinet doors, particularly if you have been cooking with the windows closed during the winter. Use a cabinet cleaner to remove any grime and leave the cabinets conditioned and moisturised.
  • Make the windows shine
Let as much sunlight in as possible by cleaning the windows inside and out. A great tip for windows is to clean them when they are not in direct sunlight, as this can leave streaks on the glass. Remember to clean the window frames and vents as these can collect a lot of grime.
  • Freshen curtains
Net curtains and drapes can collect a lot of dust and pollution, so take them down and run them through the washing machine on a cool wash. Thicker curtains may need taking to the dry cleaners, especially if they are made from a delicate fabric.
  • Clean appliances
Whether you live in a hard water area or not, all appliances benefit from the occasional deep clean to make them last longer. Use a descaling cleaner on the washing machine, dishwasher, iron and kettle. Deep clean the oven, hob and microwave to remove any built-up grime. Pull everything out of the fridge and wash with warm soapy water, and de-frost the freezer to get it ready for a summer of ice cubes.
  • De-clutter the wardrobes
Packing away winter clothes and taking a few bags of unused clothing to the charity shop will help you to feel organised and streamlined.
  • Clean duvets and pillows
Duvets and pillows can get overlooked during the winter months. Take them to the launderette or wash them in the bath and hang them out to dry in the sunshine.
  • Organise your DVDs and books
Take everything off the shelves and donate or sell anything you no longer need. Re-organise your shelves and dust them before putting back on the shelf.
