Top Tips for Choosing a Carpet

Top Tips for Choosing a Carpet

When it comes to choosing a new flooring, carpet is still one of the most popular choices out there. Not only is it super stylish and very comfortable, but it is also great for warming up rooms that might otherwise feel cold with a hard floor. But, with so many styles to choose from, where do you begin choosing the right one for your home?

Decide on the type

Carpets can either be woven or tufted. The manufacturing process for woven carpets means that both the front and back of the carpet is woven simultaneously, which is a much longer and more intensive process than tufting. This means that woven carpets are of a much higher quality. Carpet makers Axminster and Brintons are both well known for their woven carpets.

Choose a style

There are such a wide variety of surface textures that it can be tricky to know where to start! Think about the effect you are hoping to create in your room. For a luxurious finish, go for velvet piles or for a more rustic, rugged appeal choose a twist pile. Loop piles are great for creating that natural texture look, while patterned carpet is perfect for the high wear and tear areas.

Think about the material

Nylon is a great choice for rooms that will see a lot of traffic as it is extremely hardwearing. Wool is a classic choice as it is soft, doesn’t flatten easily and retains its appearance. Some of the best carpets see a mixture of wool and nylon for optimum results. Polyester is great for longevity, but it does lose its shape after a while so may need replacing in the future.

Consider the room

The type and style of carpet you need will change according to each room you use it in. Hallways, stairs and landings will see a lot of traffic, so it’s a good idea to stick with at least an 80% wool content for these areas. Bedrooms can afford to have a more luxurious finish as they are less used, while children’s rooms and dining areas would do well with man-made fibres that are hardwearing and easy to clean.

Vinyl Flooring Trends for 2018

Vinyl Flooring Trends for 2018

A room is never quite finished until the floor is done. After all, it is the floor that ties the whole room together, so when it comes to redecorating, new flooring is an absolute must. Vinyl flooring remains one of the best-selling options for redecorating as it is low maintenance, cost effective, durable, easy to install and offers a wide selection of styles. But, when it comes to choosing the right colour and style for your home, how do you begin to narrow it down?

Start with colour

The obvious starting point for your new flooring is the colour. The last few years have seen grey as the most popular choice for floors and this trend continues into 2018. One of the main reasons for this is that it provides a modern take on a classic look, providing homes with a fresh feel without making it look dark and dingy. This year is also seeing the rise of darker tones as a low maintenance option while bold colours are also coming back in a big way.

Pick a material

The next step is to consider the room that the flooring is intended for. Heavy use rooms such as hallways and kitchens might need a slightly more durable material than one used in a bathroom, for example.

Choose a style

The great thing about vinyl flooring is that you aren’t limited to one particular style. From marble and stone effect to imitation wood, there is something for every taste and budget out there. The best way to choose a style is to consider the room that the flooring is going into. Bathrooms suit stone effect tiles while living areas might work better with a wooden look.

Determine a laying pattern

Laying a vinyl floor opens up all kinds of creative opportunities. You can choose from a huge range of laying patterns to suit your home, from a traditional Victorian hallway design to a basket weave or parquet flooring finish. The sky is the limit!

6 Benefits of Rugs

6 Benefits of Rugs

Image: Galleria Rug by Mastercraft

Whether you’re looking for a way to warm up your room or bring a bit of colour, rugs are one of the best ways to make that happen. But then benefits don’t just end there! There are far more benefits to getting a rug than you might realise.

1. Noise reduction
Wooden floors are great, but they can create a lot of noise, particularly if you are living in a flat. Rugs are a great way to reduce the sound from people walking around, and they also reduce the echo in a room, making it feel homely and inviting.

2. Reduces fatigue

If you’ve ever felt joint pain, then you will know that walking on hard floors can make it so much worse! Rugs are a great way to reduce muscle and joint fatigue by providing a soft cushion to absorb some of the impact of walking.

3. Makes decorating easier
If you are planning on redecorating your room, picking out a rug is a great way to start off the process. By choosing the rug first you have a base on which to build the rest of your colour palette.

4. Floor protection
Hard floors can look lovely, but they show wear and tear very easily and need a lot of upkeep. Putting a good quality rug down will minimise this damage and protect your investment.

5. Flexibility
Another great aspect of rugs is that they don’t have to just live in one space. If you get bored of them in one room, simply move them to another and give them a whole new lease of life!

6. Easy to clean
One thing that most people forget about is that rugs are super easy to clean compared to carpets. Take the rug outside, beat it with a broom handle to loosen the dust, give it a vacuum and use a gentle shampoo to clean it. Then simply leave it in the sun to dry.

How to Bring the Industrial Look into Your Home

How to Bring the Industrial Look into Your Home

If you’re looking to update your home and you like to stay ahead of the curve, the industrial look might just be the one for you. A huge trend for 2018, industrial interiors are set to become a classic due to their robust qualities, lasting style, and wow-factor character.

If you are convinced, here are a few ways that you can bring this look into your home without breaking the bank.

Exposed Brick

One of the key factors in creating this look is having stripped back materials with the bare minimum of finishing. Rip back the plaster to reveal the beautiful brickwork underneath or if you are not so lucky, there are plenty of veneer options for a more temporary solution.

Weathered Wood

From the dining table to the floorboards, wood needs to be seriously weathered for the perfect industrial look. For a subtler approach, use weathered frames for pictures or a distressed look on the bannisters.

Metal Lighting

From exposed cables to robust, metal lampshades, lighting is a key component of this interior design trend. Whether you opt for cast iron bulb cages or aluminium downlighters, lighting is a quick and easy way to bring this trend into your home. Simply hang a bulb over the dining table or add an industrial lamp to the corner of the room.

Polished Concrete

There was a time when concrete was just seen as a functional building material, however, these days it has so many more uses. Polished concrete gives the perfect industrial look while providing a durable, robust, and gorgeous floor. Just makes sure to invest in a few decent rugs for those cold winter mornings.

Go Grey

Think of a factory and you most likely think of the colour grey. Using a palette of different greys it is possible to make a room look industrial but chic at the same time. Just contrast with weathered wood and metal fixtures and fittings and you will have the perfect industrial look!

Decorating Tips for Children’s Rooms

Decorating Tips for Children’s Rooms

Whether you’re looking for a quick freshen up or a total revamp, decorating children’s rooms can sometimes be a tricky task. As they grow, children can quickly get bored of things that used to interest them, so we have put together a list of our top tips to make sure that you don’t have to go through the redecoration process every few months!

Plan it out

Save yourself a whole lot of hassle by coming up with a plan of action. Create a mood board of colour schemes and furniture ideas that could work well for your child and let them have a say in what they like the most. If you don’t fancy the idea of constantly redecorating, try to choose colours and furniture that will grow with them.

Play it safe

For the ultimate colour scheme that will grow with your child – think white. A neutral background will enable you to update the room regularly by switching out throw pillows and using brightly coloured posters to bring character. Once they feel like a change all you need to do is update their bedding and add some new curtains. Voilà!

Safety-proof

If you have a baby or toddler, ensuring that the room is safety-proofed is an essential part of the process. Put child locks on the windows, avoid hanging heavy pictures or mirrors, secure all freestanding furniture to the walls and keep beds away from radiators in case they become very hot.

Choosing the bed

Whether they are in a cot, their first big bed, or they are teenagers looking to stretch out in a double, the youngsters in your home only deserve the best when it comes to beds!

Make it comfy

Beanbags are a great way to add some fun comfort to your child’s room, while small tipis and bunk beds also give the room a sense of adventure for little ones. Teenagers will love the addition of a TV or space to study while younger children could benefit from a giant chest to store all of their toys.

Happy decorating!

Creating the Perfect Reading Nook

Creating the Perfect Reading Nook

One of life’s little pleasures, reading is something many of us would love to do more often. But, in the midst of the day to day chaos, it can be tricky finding the time to do it. One way of making time for reading is by creating a space dedicated to it as it serves as a physical reminder to take 5 minutes out of your day.

This is why everyone needs a reading nook!

Whether you have a corner, an attic, a window seat, or a study, everyone has at least one space that they can turn into a cosy den for reading.

So, how to you transform your space into an inviting place to spend a few minutes (or hours?)

First things first - you can’t have a reading nook without a bookshelf. Whether you’re after a freestanding beauty to hold all of your treasured books or you simply want to install some floating shelves, a bookshelf is the framework for the rest of your cosy space.

Another essential part of making your space is to have a comfy place to sit. After all, you could be there for days! From snugglers to chaise lounges, there is a perfect chair for every style of reading nook you can think of. Choose one that reflects your personality and style as well as being the most comfortable chair in the house.

Now that you have the bare bones, it’s important to incorporate plenty of soft furnishings. Whether this is a crochet blanket that your grandma made or a chic and fluffy faux fur throw, soft materials are the key to making your space look inviting and cosy. Think snuggling up on a cold winters day and you get the idea.

Lighting is another crucial element in making your space functional and inviting. A coloured lamp is a great way to bring warmth and character to your space while also providing much needed light as the evening draws in.

Happy reading!

Indoor Plants: The Latest Interior Design Trend

Indoor Plants: The Latest Interior Design Trend

(Product in image: Stressless Skyline Chair and the Stressless Legend Sofa)

Whether you’re browsing Pinterest for home inspiration or window shopping at the stores in town, it’s hard to ignore the fact that plants are everywhere. From beautifully potted succulents to dramatic and imposing palms, it seems that plants are no longer just an afterthought and are now starting to take centre stage in the interior design process.

And why not! Bringing nature into your home is a great way to feel connected to the outside, add some colour, and even purify the air which is why they are now the most important accessory in finishing a room off.

But, don’t worry if you aren’t green fingered. There are plenty of super hardy plants that even the worst gardener can manage to keep alive, it’s just about picking the right one for you and your home, such as the fiddle leaf fig which requires minimal watering and upkeep. In fact, it’s essential to let the soil dry out between watering, so it’s a great plant for beginners or people who are busy. The rubber plant (image below) is another great example of this type of low maintenance option.

If you have a low light room, there are lots of plants who will relish living in the space. One of the most popular plants in the world for low light spaces is the philodendron. It’s a super-fast-growing vine that can be easily trained to climb a trellis just make sure to water it once a week. If you need a plant that can handle low light and neglect, then the ZZ plant (image below) is for you. This hardy little number can survive with very low light and minimal watering, yet it provides beautiful lush green foliage.

If you’re looking to purify the air in your home then get yourself a garden mum, perfect for removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and xylene from the air. Spider plants also excel at this and they are very easy to look after, just a light watering once in a while will keep this plant ticking over for ages. Peace lilies are also great at cleaning the air and are very easy to grow just make sure not to overwater them or have too many as the pollen from the flowers can irritate some people.

Finally, if you want some colour in your home then you need to choose a flowering plant. African violets are not just compact, but they come in a huge range of colours and varieties. Make sure you water it carefully and keep it in bright light for several blooms a year. Orchids are also beautiful flowering plants however they do require some serious upkeep, so make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for before you get one.

How to Improve the Air Quality in Your Home

How to Improve the Air Quality in Your Home

Think you are safe from pollutants and allergens inside your home? Think again. The air quality in your home can sometimes be worse than the air outside and given that we spend a lot of time inside, it’s definitely something that we need to address.

Not only does poor air quality make the house feel stuffy, but it can lead to all kinds of health issues, such as asthma and sickness.

So, what can you do to improve it?

Your first port of call is to keep all of the floors and surfaces clean and free from dust. Regularly hoovering will help to reduce the dirt on the floor and mopping will collect up any leftover particles. If you have carpets, consider vinyl or wooden flooring which are great for cease of cleaning and won’t harbour lots of dust.

If the walls haven’t been cleaned or decorated for a while, perhaps it’s time to give them a scrub with sugar soap and a fresh lick of paint. Air the room out during and after the application of any new paint and try using an odourless one to avoid any strong smells.

We all love to have our home smelling nice, but chemical air fresheners aren’t great for your health. Instead, use natural essential oils to freshen up your home and try to use natural cleaning products where possible.

Obviously, you can invest in a good quality air purifier to help out in some of the worst rooms, but others can be easily purified with the use of some good old house plants. NASA undertook a study in 1989 which found that certain houseplants, such as peace lilies, spider plants, Boston ferns, and ivy are great for cleaning the air and removing carcinogens such as formaldehyde and benzene.

Of course, one of the fastest ways to clear the air is to make it a smoke-free zone. There is now evidence to suggest that smoke from cigarettes gets into the walls and releases harmful third-hand chemicals over time. Just say no!

Finally, make all efforts to keep the humidity in your home to a minimum. Warm moisture leads to an abundance of mould spores, so keep rooms well-ventilated when you’re cooking, running the tumble drier, or taking a long shower.

Why You Need a Headboard

Why You Need a Headboard

(Image: Kingstown Nicole Headboard)

When it comes to designing the perfect bedroom, the bed is often the last thing to fall into place. After all, choosing the colour scheme and finishing touches is great fun so it can be easy to spend a lot of time thinking about them.

But, having the right headboard is arguably the most important factor in creating the perfect room! After all, you might not notice a headboard, but you certainly notice when a bed doesn’t have one.

This is because headboards provide a much-needed focal point in the bedroom. When a bed has a beautiful headboard, it looks finished and inviting. The headboard should complement the bed and room so that it doesn’t dominate the space but enhances it.

Another great reason to have a headboard is that they prevent the wall from getting marked and stained. Putting a barrier between you and the wall means that you have to redecorate much less often.

If you’ve ever woken up in the middle of the night wondering where your pillows have gone, then it is definitely time to get a headboard! They are a super-efficient way to keep your pillows in place and make sure that you get a great night’s sleep.

They are also a great way to support your back when reading at night. Leaning against the wall can mean that the bed gets pushed away, but the right headboard will prevent this from happening and ensure that you can read comfortably for as long as you like.

Headboards are available in such a wide range of materials, colours, and finishes, so there are plenty to choose from to work with the plans for your bedroom.

If you want to browse our great selection of beautiful headboards, head on down to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and the dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.
