A Guide to Buying A New Bed for National Bed Month

Did you know that March is officially National Bed Month?

This annual awareness campaign helps to shine a spotlight on the importance of quality beds for getting a good night’s sleep. A good bed should provide the correct support, comfort and space to help reduce the amount of times that you wake or are disturbed by your partner.

Getting the right amount of sleep is key to maintaining good health and general well-being, so making sure you have the right bed is super important. Research indicates that sleeping on a new medium-firm mattress can help reduce stress levels, headaches, back pains and irritability. Mattresses tend to need replacing every 5-10 years to maintain optimum levels of comfort and support.

Unsure if you need to replace your bed? It’s a good idea to get a new one if:

  • The mattress is sagging, or shows signs of wear and tear
  • You wake up with stiffness/pains
  • You get a better night’s sleep in a different bed
  • The mattress is more than 6 years old

If you are finding that you aren’t sleeping as well as you used to, or that the quality of your sleep is not great, it is probably time to replace your mattress. Before you buy, it’s a good idea to think about:

  • Whether you prefer firm, soft or medium mattresses
  • If you would rather memory foam, pocket springs or a combination of both
  • The dimensions of the bed
  • What kind of bed base works best
  • How easy it is to care for your new mattress/bed frame
  • The kind of style you would like in your room
  • Ease of assembly
  • Whether you have allergies to certain materials
  • What to do with your old one
  • If your new bed comes with a warranty
  • How often the mattress will need turning
  • Investing in mattress protection
  • Whether you want a headboard

We have plenty of comfortable, supportive beds to choose from at our store in Weston-super-Mare, many of which are currently in the sale. Check out our great range online or visit the store to test them out.

Bachelor Pad Essentials

While some bachelor pads may evoke thoughts of sports memorabilia and untidy spaces, more and more single men are proving that style is a key component of the perfect bachelor pad. From colour schemes to furniture styles, there are a myriad of ways to create spaces that are handsome, elegant warm and welcoming.

Avoiding clichés is an important step in creating the perfect bachelor pad. They can quickly become dated, meaning that a carefully decorated room will need a re-vamp in a short space of time. Sticking to classic materials such as glass and solid wood will mean your furniture will stand the test of time.

When it comes to picking the perfect sofa, it has to be leather. This durable material not only lasts forever but will also fit seamlessly into any self-respecting man flat. Be careful when choosing the colour, however, as black leather sofas in a bachelor pad can be a no-no. Choosing a sofa in a warm chestnut brown makes a room look traditional, yet contemporary at the same time.

Parker Knoll Canterbury

For a high-end touch, investing in mid-century modern inspired pieces is a sure-fire way to create masculine style in any space. Combining wood with chrome accents produces a style which translates well into a bachelor pad. Bookshelves and coffee tables can be used as focal points, adding a warm, welcoming feeling to the home, as well as helping to keep the place tidy.

Jual BS200 Bookcase

Unusual decorative items will bring personality to a room, but remember to use them sparingly. Too many framed football shirts and novelty items will make any pad look tacky and uncared for, so keep your selections classy and minimal. A safe bet is to stick with metal, solid wood and glass as they will all retain their style over time.

Dinosaur Skeleton

One of the most important features in any bachelor pad is the entertainment centre. But rather than having the TV as the main feature in a room, try to make it blend in with the rest of the furniture when it is not in use. Classic, simple designs will help to minimise focus on the TV, helping to make it look like a stylish piece of furniture.

Designing a Room Around a Signature Piece

What is a signature piece?

Every now and again, a piece of furniture grabs your full attention and demands that you invest in it at once. Whether it’s a statement bed frame or a boldly patterned sofa, as soon as you see it, you know that it perfectly encapsulates your personality and style. This is known as a signature piece, an item which gives your room an injection of your charisma along with that all-important wow factor. Signature pieces can be furniture, artwork or fabrics which create focal points in a room and help to set the tone for conveying your home’s character.

Choosing your signature item

You may already have that signature item stowed away or it could still be on the shop floor waiting for you to rescue it. You may not have even found that perfect piece yet, but once you do, you will know about it! However, if you struggle with making that final selection, it’s a good idea to make sure the piece is useful so that it doesn’t sit around collecting dust and getting in the way. Ensure the sofa you are ogling is comfortable or that the table you are lusting after seats enough people. Pick something you love looking at, such as a colourful light fitting or a large mirror.

Creating a theme for your room may also give you the inspiration you need, for example basing your selections around a country farmhouse style may lead you to finding the perfect statement shabby chic dining table. Look at collector’s items, vintage designer pieces, beautifully handcrafted items and heirloom quality builds. This way you can be sure that you will get years of use from your beautiful new item.

Designing the rest of the room

Now that you’ve made your choice it’s time to start building the rest of the room around your item. Everyone is different when it comes to personal taste, but there are some tips which may help when it comes to finishing your project;

  • Shape

If your signature piece has an interesting shape or geometry to it, try to replicate that elsewhere in the room to tie it together. For example, if you have selected a curved coffee table look at picking up on that shape in wallpapers or fabrics to echo it around the room.

  • Size

Large signature pieces such as huge bed frames and extended dining tables can overwhelm a crowded room. Look at reducing the amount of furniture in that room so that your signature piece has space to shine. Conversely, smaller items, such as an ornate lamp, may need framing with other complementary pieces such as a side table.

  • Style

The rule book for sticking to one style has been thrown out of the window. Blending styles is very popular these days and it is very common to see opulent antique items perched beautifully next to contemporary pieces. You may have selected a 1960’s armchair as your signature piece but you do not have to design the entire room in a mid-century style for it to fit in. Create a mood board on Pinterest of your favourite designs and look for ways to blend them together.

  • Colour

The colour of your favourite item can help you to create the entire scheme for the room. If your new piece of furniture is multi-coloured, keep the rest of the room more muted so that the piece stands out. Alternatively, take one or two of your favourite colours from the item for the walls and fabrics, so that the piece ties in with the rest of the room.

10 Inexpensive Ways to Spruce up Your Master Bedroom

If your bedroom is looking a bit neglected, there are a whole host of ways you can give it a quick makeover this weekend without breaking the bank. Simple adjustments can give a room a new lease of life without the need to fully redecorate, so if you are thinking about sprucing up your master bedroom this weekend, check out some of our top tips to get you started:

  1. Fresh flowers or potted plants bring life and colour into any room, though make sure you choose ones which are suitable for placing in a bedroom.

  2. Take down those ancient curtains and replace them with a funky new blind or fresh new material to let the light in ready for summertime.

  3. Change the lightbulbs to ones with a warmer, softer setting, which will diffuse the light and make the room feel cosy. Dust off fabric lampshades to let the light out and reduce the potential for allergies.

  4. De-clutter wardrobes, cupboards, drawers and cabinets. Create a bag of clothes to take to the charity shop and remove unnecessary items lurking in the bottom of drawers or under the bed collecting dust.

  5. Thoroughly clean those neglected hard to reach places and give your bedding a good airing outside (if the weather permits!).

  6. Change the layout of the room by moving the furniture to different areas.

  7. Picking up those new bedsheets you’ve been lusting after will give your bed a dramatic makeover.

  8. Hanging mirrors on the wall will not only give you somewhere to check your outfit before you leave but will also help to bounce light around the room.

  9. Rugs can transform a space without the need to lay a full carpet. Choose a rug which is a completely different colour to give your room an overhaul.

  10. Investing in a new bed is a great way to make sure you get a great night’s sleep. This amazing memory foam Reylon Aurora bed is currently in the sale so won’t break the bank.

Creating a Beautiful Home Office

The number of people working from home has risen to its highest level since records began, with nearly 20% of the population now choosing to work from the comfort of their own space. Whether you are one of the stay-at-homers or if you simply use your home office to get your bills sorted, it’s important to make sure the space is as beautiful and functional as you can make it.  Studies show that the space around you can have a huge impact on your productivity, so keeping your office stylish and well-designed will help to boost your efficiency and overall mood. Here are some things to keep in mind when creating your perfect space;

Colours

Choosing the right colours can directly affect the way you feel.  According to Wright’s theory, blue stimulates the mind and creates focus, yellow inspires optimism and creativity while green creates a calming balance. Red is good for physical activities as it increases blood flow and heart rate. Whichever colour you choose, make sure to steer clear of beige, brown, purple and orange, as these colours tend to have a depressive effect on workers.

Location

Where is the best place for you to work from? Position yourself in a quiet room where you are unlikely to be disturbed and make sure you can see out of a window or door from your desk as natural light boosts mood and well-being. Corner desks are great for optimising small spaces in an elegant way.

Organisation

Having enough storage is key to keeping yourself methodical and efficient. Pick up some pen holders and invest in some beautiful filing cabinets and bookcases to keep your paperwork and projects organised.

Chair

Working long hours means spending a huge amount of time sitting down. Investing in an ergonomic, high-quality office chair will help prevent any aches and pains while increasing concentration and focus. Our Stressless office chairs are perfect for home working and are currently in the sale.

Lighting

Lighting can make all the difference, particularly if your desk is situated in a gloomy part of the house. Adding an elegant desk lamp will help alleviate eye strain and reduce the chance of headaches. Make sure to avoid any glare from windows behind you, as this can also cause a strain on your eyes.

How to Choose the Perfect Flooring

Kura Collection by Amtico

When it comes to creating the perfect “look” for your home, flooring is one of the most vital ingredients. The type and style of flooring that you choose can make or break the other design elements of your space, so getting it right is key to perfecting the interior you’re looking for. With so many options available these days, selecting the right material and style can be overwhelming, which is why we have put together a few tips to remember which will help you choose the right floor for your next interior design project.

Spanish Cherry Parquet by Karndean

Which room are you focusing on?

Whichever room you are looking to decorate, it’s a good idea to first think about how the space is used. For example, hallways and kitchens have lots of foot traffic so selecting a hardwearing material for these spaces makes sense. Hardwoods such as the Spanish Cherry Parquet above can cope with high volume traffic, while linoleum provides an inexpensive yet easy to clean surface in hundreds of designs. Both are available at our stores for fitting throughout the Somerset area.

Long gone are the days when carpet was the first choice for a bathroom. As these spaces tend to see a lot of moisture, stone and ceramic tiling are a wonderfully functional choice to avoid any mould or mildew build ups. While the world is your oyster for which flooring to choose for the living room, remember that stone and wood can be cold on the feet, so if you prefer your lounge to be a cosy space you may want to think about wool rich carpets such as the Abbeyglen Fermanagh Plaid design from Brintons below.

Abbeyglen Fermanagh Plaid by Brintons

What style are you aiming for?

Using sites such as Pinterest to create mood boards of your favourite styles and colour schemes will give you an overview of which kind of styles you are after. Nothing quite beats seeing the samples in person though, as you can get a feel for textures and how easy it will be to maintain the product. Our dedicated team in Weston-super-Mare will be able to help you select the right style and material for your intended room.

It is worth noting that choosing a classic design will ensure the longevity of your flooring, meaning that you will not have to invest in a new one when you decide to change the colour scheme further down the line. Black and white tiling will never go out of fashion and is easy to update with colour pops when you grow tired of the existing colour scheme.

We have a huge range of flooring styles and designs available at our store in Weston-super-Mare; from luxury wool-rich carpets and easy to care for linoleum to parquet and beautiful stone. How to Colour Match in the Home

Parker Knoll Canterbury

There’s no doubt that sticking to a neutral palette is an easy way to create a beautiful space, but adding bold colours and patterns can be a lot more straight-forward than you might think.

The first step is to choose a base colour to work from. Certain colours can actually improve your mood, using orange for example can create a sense of reassurance and warmth while green generates feelings of balance and stability, so it’s important to think about how you want to feel in your chosen room. Selecting a neutral colour means you can alter the overall feel of the room by changing curtains, cushions and furniture without worrying too much about the walls, though you need to consider the colour of the flooring and whether this will work with other styles. Your base colour might come from your favourite artwork, a cushion or your favourite set of curtains.

Once you have found a base, you can move on to matching other colours with it. Using sites such as Pinterest to create a mood board of shades you like will help you to get an overall idea of how the finished look will come together, but the easiest way to mix and match is to stick within a spectrum of tones, such as:

  • Warm tones – autumnal colours such as red, brown, yellow and orange create a cosy, inviting atmosphere.
  • Cool tones – sea and sky colours like greens, blues, turquoise and aqua-marine help to produce a relaxing yet fresh environment.
  • Monotones – sticking to a black and white theme with accents of gold, soft lilac or hot pink creates a contemporary feel.
  • Neutral tones – a palette of natural stone, grey, amber and ochre will make any room feel modern and inviting.
  • Citrus tones – colours such as lime green, acid yellow or bright orange gives energy and vigour to a space.

Cushions, throws and curtains can be used as accents for stronger colours, but remember that choosing curtains that blend in with the walls helps to make a room feel larger by creating an unbroken line.

If you are looking to colour match in your home, get in touch with our experienced, knowledgeable staff by calling 01934 513740 or email us via the Contact Us page. You can also visit us at our furniture and carpet showroom on the High Street in Weston-super-Mare.

Top Tips for Cleaning Your Sofa

Parker Knoll Hanbury Chair

No doubt your tables, floors and shelves get a regular clean – but what about the sofa? The most frequently used piece of furniture in the home can become a magnet for dirt, dust and stains, but instead of calling in expensive professional cleaners, check out these top sofa cleaning tips;

Identify the material

Whether you have a leather, corduroy, linen, or cotton sofa, each material will require different care. If you are unsure, search for a label to help you ascertain what kind of fabric you’re dealing with.

W – sofa can be washed with water

SW – sofa can be washed with water or solvent cleaner

S – sofa can be washed with solvent cleaner

X – sofa cannot be washed, only use a vacuum cleaner

Give it a surface clean

Take all of the cushions off of the sofa and, using the upholstery attachment on the hoover, vacuum the folds, crevices and corners to remove food debris and dust. Look out for any nice chunks of change! If you are working with a delicate fabric such as silk and linen, make sure the hoover is set to a low suction to avoid tearing or ripping the fabric. Go over the whole sofa in horizontal overlapping strokes, particularly if the sofa is made from suede, chenille, velvet or corduroy. Clean out dust from button tufts by using a can of compressed air, usually used to clean keyboards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVPwd05898s

Removing spot stains

Always use a white towel or sponge to remove stains as you do not want any colour to run into the fabric of the sofa. Choose a cleaner based on the fabric of your sofa, if you are not sure, carry out a spot test on a hidden part of the fabric to avoid damaging the material. Check out this video for ways to remove any stubborn stains from the fabric of your sofa.

Eliminating odours

Unpleasant odours can easily and cheaply be removed thanks to the amazing deodorising properties of baking soda! Sprinkle your sofa with the powder, leave for half an hour and vacuum up. You can repeat this for any particularly stubborn smells, or even add a drop of essential oil to the baking soda before applying, though be careful not to stain the fabric.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXEkaY6P8BQ

Cleaning leather

Cleaning leather is a bit different to cleaning fabric. This great video shows you how you can use baking soda to clean up dirty white leather seats, you can also use gentle soap and a slightly damp cloth to achieve the same effect.

We have a huge selection of lovely clean sofas at our store in Weston-super-Mare, pop down and have a look.
