How to Use Lighting to Create Moods in Your Home

How to Use Lighting to Create Moods in Your Home

When approaching interior design, whether on a small project or large-scale renovation, lighting is of paramount importance when it comes to the finished product. For both professionals and amateurs alike, it is the lighting positioning and style that performs as a stage to showcase the rest of your hard work. Beyond that, it also directly affects the size and mood of each room. So, next time you decide to freshen your space, why not focus on the lighting to bring drama and change the mood? Here are a few details to assist you when moving on to your next decorating or design project:

Make Spaces Look Bigger

  • Use multiple light sources at different levels to create an illusion of space, spread it about with ceiling lights, lamps, freestanding lights.
  • Enhance any aspects of a room that make it stand out. If it has high ceilings, suspend lights on long pendants to accentuate that. If you have unique wallpaper or artwork, use direct spotlights to highlight them.
  • Bounce light around the room using mirrors. If you don’t have any mirrors, then you know your next job!

Make Spaces Feel Cosier

  • Frame an unused wall or corner with a wall light or pendant downlight, furnish with a comfy chair and little coffee table, and you have somewhere nice to snuggle up and read a book!
  • Use soft coloured bulbs, such as creams, off-whites, warm light pinks.
  • Avoid blue lights and fluorescents as they bring a harsh coldness to the room.

Change a Spaces Mood

  • Use perimeter lighting such as wall uplighters for a relaxed atmosphere.
  • For the reverse effect, focus bright lights in the centre for a more intense atmosphere.
  • Use soft diffused lighting with pastel shades for a room with a mellow mood.
  • Fit dimmer switches where possible. You are then in control of the room's mood and can adjust it in seconds.

Head to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.

5 Top Tips for Achieving the Shabby Chic Look

5 Top Tips for Achieving the Shabby Chic Look

Shabby chic is a classic style that has been around for decades. Featuring a combination of white walls and pastel colours, items with a ‘distressed’ look, old worn sofas, faded paintwork and fixtures, the overall aesthetic is well-worn, comfortable, and super appealing. The style, unlike the paint, never seems to fade.

Here are 5 must-have items to add shabby chic to your home:

1. Tables

A perennial favourite and instant attention grabber in dining rooms and kitchens. They set off any existing style you have currently and are easy to add accessories to as there’s not much that doesn't look snazzy on a shabby chic table!

2. Antique Fixtures

A feature in any room, antique fixtures are what sets shabby chic apart from other styles. Add old style lamps to coffee tables, brass candle holders to distressed dining tables, quirky bookends to bookshelves, flowery vases to window sills.

3. White Walls and Accessories

White walls are a shabby chic staple, as once they are decorated there are a variety of accessories you can use to draw the eye. If you have a wall with unused space then why not hang up this Charles River Clock? A simple stylish way to make a feature out of a wall.

4. Wooden Floors

Shabby chic is not a style that goes hand in hand with minimalist perfection, in fact, it's the antithesis of it. Wooden floorboards with the perfect rug to set it off can often be more stylish and homely than expensive marble floor tiles. We have a large collection that is perfect for this style here.

5. Coffee Table Accessories

Mixing shabby chic with modern is a great way of keeping the look up to date. If you find that perfect candle holder or antique box and unsure where to place it why not add it to our Jual Lamp Table, perfect for mixing styles and keeping everything fresh!

6 Biggest Decorating Do’s and Don’ts

6 Biggest Decorating Do’s and Don’ts

Although it can involve lots of hard work, decorating your home can also be really exciting. So, the last thing you need when you’re investing lots of time, money, and energy is for all of your efforts to go to waste!

Check out our list of do’s and don’ts to make sure your next decorating project is a huge success!

DO

Plan

Planning your decorating project ahead of time is a great way to make sure that you stick to a budget and cover everything you want to address in the room. Draw up a list of everything that needs to be done, from clearing the room and stripping wallpaper to the fancy finishing touches.

Measure furniture

Cramming too much furniture into space can make a room feel small and overcrowded. Measure any potential pieces and mark out where they would fit into the room with masking tape to ensure that there is sufficient space around the furniture to move.

Select colours wisely

If your room doesn’t get much sunlight, using bright neutral tones can help to open it up and create the illusion of more light. Dark colours will make a room feel smaller and cosier, so save those for rooms that are able to handle them.

DON’T

Underestimate the lighting

So many rooms could benefit from the help of some strategically placed floor lamps or beautifully hung light fixtures. Think of lighting as the jewellery that goes with an expensive dinner date outfit. Make sure it shines!

Match

It’s great to choose a theme, but when everything matches in a room it can look over-the-top and too “done”. Instead, create a collection of items that relate to and complement each other without being too matchy.

Forget about the small details

The little things are what makes a room special, from the print on a fabric to the design of a floor, so don’t forget about them!

Interior Design Resolutions for 2018

Interior Design Resolutions for 2018

There’s nothing better than a fresh new year for setting goals, particularly when it comes to your home. After all of the Christmas decorations have been taken down and the new year begins, rooms that have hosted festive celebrations for the last few weeks can sometimes feel a little empty, but it is a great opportunity to see them as a blank canvas.

So, if you’ve always wanted to makeover your lounge, or bring a bit of sparkle to your dining room then perhaps this is the year to do it!

Here are some interior design resolution ideas to get you started in 2018:

  • Don’t worry about trends
Trends come and go. They might seem like a great idea at the time, but unless you have gone for a timelessly classic trend then it is likely to go out of fashion before 2019 starts and you’ll have to start all over again! Trust your gut and your own sense of style to determine how your room is going to end up.

  • Quality over quantity
Investing in quality pieces of furniture might seem like an expensive outlay at first, but is always a great move – not only do they last forever but they add a certain elegance and style that cheaper pieces don’t convey.

  • Bring in some colour
If you always play it safe with magnolias and off-whites, why not try something new this year by introducing some bold colour, prints, and patterns. If you’re not quite feeling brave enough to splash bright colours all over the walls, use them as accents in cushions, curtains or furniture instead.

  • Declutter
Redecorating a room is the perfect chance to remove all of the unnecessary clutter and mess that somehow manages to accumulate over a period of time! Clearing it out will give your space a cleaner, more appealing feel and you will have more space to put that new sofa you’ve been lusting after!

However, you choose to redecorate your home this year, remember that our store is filled with beautiful furniture perfect for any room in the home.

So, head to our showroom in Weston-super-Mare or drop us a line on 01934 513740 to speak to our experienced, knowledgeable staff. They will provide you with support and dedicated assistance to help you find the perfect items for every room in the house.

How to Give Back Over the Festive Season

How to Give Back Over the Festive Season

It’s the perfect time to give back to the community and help those who are less fortunate than yourself. So, even if you only have a spare 5 minutes in the midst of the Christmas madness, there are plenty of ways you can help others in Weston-super-Mare during the festive season.

Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen

If you’ve always thought about volunteering in a soup kitchen but just haven’t gotten around to it yet, this is the perfect year to make it happen! Comfort at Christmas is a soup kitchen operating from St Pauls Church on Walliscote Road, Weston-super-Mare with the aim of providing warmth and food to anyone seeking respite from the cold.

Feed a family

Food banks continue to see record numbers of people relying on them, particularly during the festive season. Make a family’s life a little bit easier this year by donating your time, money, or food to keep needy families fed this Christmas. Find out how you can help by contacting the Weston-super-Mare Food Bank.

Visit an Elderly Person

Plenty of elderly people will be spending Christmas alone this year, so why not make their day a little brighter by paying them a visit! The Royal Voluntary Service in Weston-super-Mare is looking for volunteers to befriend elderly people and make them feel a little less lonely this Christmas.

Help the Animals

We all know that a dog is for life and not just for Christmas, but sadly not everyone sticks to this rule. Animal shelters could always benefit from helping hands and generous donations to look after the animals. Take a rescue dog for some exercise, or donate food, blankets and toys to rescue centres such as Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary.

Sponsor a Christmas Dinner

If you’re unable to donate your time or get out and about this year, why not sponsor a homeless person to have a Christmas dinner with Crisis this year? Your donation not only goes towards feeding a homeless person and making sure they have company and shelter on Christmas Day but also contributes towards healthcare, dental treatment, a haircut and learning opportunities.

We hope you are looking forward to Christmas!

4 Easy Ways to Have a Homemade Christmas

4 Easy Ways to Have a Homemade Christmas

Christmas doesn’t have to be a season of spending excess, in fact, with a little bit of thought and effort you can create a truly magical Christmas using your own crafting skills!

So, if you are worried about hitting the high street with a strict budget and a limited amount of time to have everything done by, why not get the whole family involved and create your own handmade Christmas from the luxury of your own living room?

Try these fun and unique Christmas ideas to save yourself time and money this festive season:

 1. Design your own cards

Instead of buying cards this year, get the children involved in designing and making some festive greeting cards. A great way to add a personalised touch to your Christmas and keep them busy at the same time! Use glitter, broken bits of tinsel, photo collages – whatever you can find and let their imaginations run wild!

 2. Create a unique and reusable advent calendar

Ok, so having a chocolate advent calendar is top of many people’s wish lists, but making an original and reusable calendar means you have something you can bring out every year. Find a branch in your local park and hang the days of the month on it, removing each one as you countdown to Christmas.

 3. Follow festive recipes

Everyone loves receiving food and drinks at Christmas, so why not get festive in the kitchen this year and give consumables made with your own hands. Festive hot chocolates, Christmas cakes, flavoured vodkas, and infused olive oils are all simple and easy gifts for friends and family.

 4. Make a wreath

Wreaths can get quite expensive, so save a few pennies by creating your own door ornament this year. Wrap foliage, baubles, tinsel and fairy lights around an old coat hanger to bring festive cheer to your doorstep this season!

How to Create Hygge in Your Home

How to Create Hygge in Your Home

It’s now officially December which means long winter nights and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Danish concept of hygge.

Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) cannot be directly translated into English as it is a feeling, one associated with cosiness, warmth, happiness and wellbeing. The Danes are well-known for their culture of relaxed calm and peaceful happiness, and it is often attributed to their love of creating hygge moments whenever possible.

While hygge is pretty subjective and can mean different things to different people, it is essentially based on the concept of mindful enjoyment and cosy serenity, which many of us will be able to replicate in our own homes, especially with the festive season on the horizon. From curling up with a good book to snuggling in front of the fire, hygge really just means being aware of the little things in life that make us happy and bring us joy.

So, how can you create more hygge moments in your home?

Light candles – simple but extremely effective, the soft glow of candles will instantly transform the atmosphere in any room to one of cosy warmth.

Get cosy – hygge is all about being warm, so hunker down on the sofa or in bed and pile on plenty of blankets, cushions, and pillows in natural materials to make yourself feel cosy while it’s cold outside.

Turn off the TV – spending an evening around the fire connecting with friends and family is a much better way to enjoy some relaxed time together. Share an informal meal and a bottle of wine to encourage everyone to unwind.

Go for a long walk – there’s nothing more hygge than wrapping up, going for a long walk in the cold and coming home to a cosy warm home to eat a bowl of hot soup and fresh bread.

Enjoy crafting – the dark winter months are the perfect time to spend on your favourite hobbies, particularly if they involve being crafty. Seek out your knitting needles or paints and create a new masterpiece!

5 Ways to Improve Your Home Office

5 Ways to Improve Your Home Office

As anyone who works from home knows, the home office is one of the most important spaces in the house. Unfortunately, it often suffers from mild neglect, with mismatching furniture, large (unused) workout equipment and piles of laundry taking up most of the space.

However, according to the principles of Feng shui, keeping an orderly and calm workspace actually make us more productive.

Isn’t it time you sorted out your home workspace?

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Address the lighting – Yes, you might have an overhead light already, but why not ramp up the ambience factor with some strategically placed lamps. Lighting can have a huge impact on the way a space feels, making it feel much more welcoming and cosy.
  • Choose colour scheme wisely – colours can have a huge impact on our ability to concentrate so make sure you do some research before you decorate. Greens and yellows are known for promoting productivity while reds and oranges are supposed to be rather distracting.
  • Upgrade your office chair – office chairs don’t even look good in offices, so unless you need one for specific back support, think about upgrading to a beautifully elegant dining chair instead.
  • Stimulate the senses – using an essential oil diffuser is a great way to stimulate your brain, peppermint and eucalyptus, in particular, are known for their concentration-enhancing properties.
  • Bring life to your desk – pot plants not only look great but they also purify the air around you, so keep one on your desk for a breath of fresh air!

We can’t promise that these tips will make you work harder, but they will at least give you an Instagram-worthy office space!
